I've gotten down to absolute basics with this, mobo, one stick of ram (well, actually 5 different ones, all known good), PSU, no drives/cards. The G.D. thing won't even post... has anyone even ever heard of this thing? I buddy of mine brought it over to help build him a el-basico computer but it seems to be a piece of crap to me. On-board crap VGA, and a duron 1.3 bundled with it :(

It was cheap, but ECS seems to stand for Extremely Crappy Stuff so far to me.

Any chance you have the heatsink reversed 180°? That would trip the thermal protection on most boards in under a second. I'm gonna dl the manual and see if I see any other stuff to look for. #1 target: a 100/133 jumper for the CPU bus.

Naw, heatsink comes mounted, and there are no real jumper settings except for clear CMOS... I think this thing is going back regardless due to it's lack of a AGP slot.

Looks like CPU detection is fully automatic.

Uh, ClearCMOS jumper isn't in the Clear position or anything? Tried the board outside the case? You got a reasonable PSU for it, a quality 300W or thereabouts? Are you getting fans to spin but nothing else, or does it just ignore you, or does it start and then stop?

Hmm, might consider a Biostar M7VIG if you need SDRAM support:

Sometimes the JP-1 cmos jumper pin is in the shorted position when the mb arrives.

Does the cpu hsfan spin-up ............ or any other signs of life?

I guess the mb could be OK and the cpu be the problem .............. try another one if possible.

Every single board I have got from these companies (PCchip,ECS,Amptron, etc) has the cmos shorted.

This is a definite "check this out" thing.
