Edit In stock as of 2:15 central time today!

Cool, can't wait to see what other manufacturers make a board with the 745. I'm anxiously looking forward to the Abit KS7 and whatever else comes out...

WOW. I thought it would still be more expensive. Anyone know if this board has any better overclocking options than the k7s5a?

That means its most likely just 2-3 weeks away from launch (err till newegg gets it), hope Abit ain't to far behind. Me hope it ties the 266a or maybe even beats it.

I thought that the sis735 chipset also supported firewire... If i remember correctly the test mobo that was sent out to reviewers had firewire... SO i was waiting for a sis735 board to have it as well.

That's great, too little too late for me though. I'm looking into upgrading my Athlon (550 with AMD 751 chipset) hehe, to the next SiS or VIA chipset with 8x AGP, ulra-ata 133, descent Creative onboard audio, onboard firewire and USB 2.0 Its not a good time i think to upgrade now. And motherboard prices as low as they are now (Epox, MSI) it'll be cool

<< I saw that to tonight... No mention of IEEE 1394 which is supported by the 745 chipset. >>

It was long known that the ECS 745 board would not have firewire, all though it is believed to be on the KS7 from Abit.

SiS 735 does not (and never did) support Firewire. The reference boards simply used a third-party chip to control 1394A functionality. 745, however, does have Firewire built in. ECS won't be making use of it, which will disappoint some... I'm quite sure another vendor will make use of the capabilities.

i would assume its ocing the chip cause i have a feeling they still have the different fsb/memory bug. in sis735 100/133 was slower than 100/100, i hope they fixed it. so i would assume your cpu needs to be able to do 166 in order for you to see the full enhancements of the 166 memory.

Is anyone else disappointed in the K7S6A? I have a K7S5A and I love it but I don't see much of anything in the K7S6A that is better than the K7S5A.

Two of the things I love about my K7S5A is the built-in LAN and the placement of the AMR slot. This AMR slot is not shared with any of the PCI slots. That means I can install an AMR modem and utilize the built-in LAN and still have 5 PCI slots free.

With the K7S6A, it looks like the CNR slot and the last PCI slot are shared. Coupled with the fact that there is no built-in LAN, the number of expansion slots is less than that of the K7S5A. If I install a PCI modem and LAN card, I will only have 3 free PCI slots.

Finally, the K7S6A does not implement the built-in firewire support of the SIS 745 chip.

The only improvements are 3 DDR DIMM slots (as opposed to 2 on the K7S5A) and support for DDR333.

Bah, 745 is about as worthless as KT333...not much of an improvement

The only ones to get are 746 (ATA133, USB2.0, AGP8x) and KT333A (ATA133, USB2.0, AGP8x)

The wait continues, but what good is ATA133, AGP8x, and even USB2.0?
There's little advantage to these at least in the near future.

ha this reminds me on those games we had before. I can really good remember when I bought my first MoBo with USB on it. all my friends asked me "hey whats that good for ? there are no devices you could use.." and so on.. and now?? most of the external devices are USB. This is what will happen to USB 2.0 and any other technology too.

It's never wrong to have some upgrade options on your board, because (at least I made this experience) you change many things in your PC until you finally change your mainboard.

UDMA133 has also the advantage of having the new 48bit large adressblock so one can use HDDs larger than 137 Gigs.
8x AGP is soon standard for VGA cards, just look to the next cards NVIDIA & ATI release. also matrox was mentioned to have a new killerCard supporting 8X AGP.

But I also agree with KGB that it is indeed not a good time for upgrading your Mobo right now. I was absolutely happy with the Nforce420-D board I had until i read that nVidia is releasing the NV415-D. But now it's too late 😉

One thing that should be obvious but I learned the hard way-never, ever buy a first generation motherboard unless you absolutely have to. If you wait 2-3 months the improvement to the motherboard will be enormous and you can also get a better idea what changes are improvements and what re fluff.

Esp. at the rate MB's are changing now, I'd buy comething simple and cheap like the K7S5A if I had to build now, then perhaps reevaluate the decision later.

I hope the sis740 and KM266, both video intergrated chipset will be low cost and stable as well. Its very important because it will allow AMD to have a better success in low cost / office env. while onboard Video is a must. In Europe Duron is a better success than in US.
I believe the firewire IEEE 1394 and USB 2.0 will go head to head. Can't tell which one will be a standard in future but i will go with fireware.

Also keep an eye on sis755, chipset for the hammer!
(mixed info on sis755 <- not sure if it is the correct number, it may also be a video intergrated chipset as well, but we will see)

Where are the reviews? I'm dying to see what this puppy can do.

Edit: Mine shipped out last night from Newegg so it should be here Monday or Tuesday. Guess that puts the doubts to rest about it actually being in stock 😉

SiS 746 will add USB 2.0, ATA/133 integrated -- in addition to 1394. It's gonna be a beauty 🙂

755 is 745 with the integrated 315 graphics core. Ought to be very nice for all-in-one machines.

Now excuse me while I assemble my new K7S6A and XP 2000+ 😀

when you guys say a certain mb supports firewire do you mean the connector is actually built in to the motherboard so you dont have to buy a pci firewire card?
