Will this board support Mushkin 512mb PC3200 stick of RAM? I'm thinking of swapping my two no name 256's for this 1 stick of mushkin to hopefully get to boot in 150/150. My system locks whenever I go above 147/147 from mod'd bios.

Is the memory you have now pc2100?

The K7S5A was pretty picky about memory; I never tried a 512mb chip in mine before I killed it though.

So it won't matter that I'm going from PC 2100 256x2 to PC 3200 512x1?

Just making sure, as I picked up a stick in the package from a friend today for 25 bucks!

I've run 2x512mb generic PC2100 DIMMs and 2x256mb Kingston HyperX PC3000 in my K7S5A with no problems. I see no reason why you'd have a problem.

I've got a K7 with a 512 stick. Works fine. I don't know how much speed improvement you'll see though. Anybody know what the fastest chip this board will support? I've got an XP 1800+ and I'm thinking of upgrading.

I was under the impression that it'll go as high as you want as long as you don't go barton. Stay in the t-breds and you'll be fine. I'm pretty sure I had a 2400 in one at one time. I'm not sure if I am remembering correctly though!

I don't doubt it. I pretty much knew when I bought the K7S5A that upgrading would be limitted. I think i'd be better off getting a new board and a Barton based Semp. My 1800+ (thunderbird) runs hot. When I built my system, I had to put in two case fans just to get it to post. The Athlon 2000+ (Sempr0n 2400+) must be one hot running chip (or I was just unlucky with mine). Also, at stores I usually buy from, the Semps are cheaper than the Athlon equivalents. I believe that the K7S5A only has 256 FSB support. I guess if I had to do a budget upgrade, I'd switch to a Nforce 2 board and go with a Sempr0n. More likely though, I'll buy a new system in a year or so and use this one as a HTPC hub.

You can use a t-breb 2600+ as long as it is the 266fsb model as the fastest normal CPU installation. The K7 are picky with sdram, but will run fine with just about any junky DDR2100 you put in it. If you search the net you will find a couple of sites that offer modified Bios for these boards, and YES you can run all the 333fsb t-breds and Bartons on this board. You will have to boot at 133, then load CHFSB automatically with windows to change the fsb to 166 (chipset not stable at 200fsb). I have run a 333fsb t-bred 2700+, a 2600+ Barton, and a 3000+ Barton. The 735 chipset performs better than the VIA333/400 and NF1 at 166fsb. I still have one running a 2500+ Barton with a CPU pin mod at 13.5X166 (2150mhz).

yea any ddr works basically. 150-166mhz fsb is pushing your luck though, almost never works on these particular boards. better of pin modding/bridge cutting to increase mulitplier instead:p thats how i oc'd my 2400barton to 2.2ghz and a tbred 2000+ to 2.4ghz.

Just incase you guys were wondering..

I brought it up at 150/150 w/ the new Muskin 3200 512 stick and it booted and counted just fine. I got into Windows and ran Memtest, and Prime95 off and on for a few hours. ZERO errors, and Prime ran without a single fault.

Awesome. Now it's time to get this A64 up and running :)

It WILL accept Bartons, BUT it will not run at 200fsb. The chipset will boot at 100 or 133fsb with a stock BIOS, it will boot between 100-150fsb with a hacked BIOS, it will not boot if the FSB if set to 166fsb. It will run 166fsb once in windows with CHFSB (which can be placed to load with windows). I have tries various V1.0 to V3 and none have been able to boot at 166fsb or run 200fsb in windows for more that 5 seconds. I even tried this on a couple of K7S6A's with the same results.

My current setup is with a 2500+ that I pin modded to a multiplier of 13.5. It boots at 13.5X133, once windows loads CHFSB loads automatically and changes the FSB to 166. This all happens with no further involvement than the original setup. This is at stock voltage, and it runs great. Its been running for about 7 months this way without a single problem.

The best CPU upgrade I could find for my K7S5A was the AMD Mobile Athlon XP 2600+ (Newegg.com).

It has the Barton Core with the larger 512 KB Cache. It booted up at 15 x 133 MHz = 2.0 GHz.

It will run at 15 x 147 MHz = 2.2 GHz, but is sometimes unstable, probably due to my current PC 2100 memory.

I plan on putting in a 512 MB stick of Mushkin PC3200 mentioned over in Hot Deals and will see if it can boot at 150 MHz and remain stable. Although, it might be better to run at stock speed with 768 MB keeping one of my 256 MB PC2100 sticks on the board for now.
