ECS K7S5A with floppy drive

I have ECS K7S5A mobo but I can't get new sony floppy drive to read disk even with light still working...I tried with other drive no go. Can you help me? I have latest BIO and all are up to date.

What I have on system:

AMD Duron (Spitfire) 700MHz
Windows 2000 Pro SP2
256MB PC133
Seagate 40GB hard drive
Que 40x24x10 CDRW
Eagle TRi tape back up
ATI Radeon
Intel Hardware modem
NEC MultiSync 5FGp monitor

Three possibilities;

1. FDD controller dead

2. DOA FDD

3. connection errors

FDD cable often looks like this

0-------0--x--0

The first 0 connects to motherboard and x represent cross over. You're supposed to connect the connector after the x-over to a FDD.

Did it read the floppy before you installed your operating system? If not, try switching the cable around at the floppy end (esp. if busy light on all the time). Recheck motherboard to make sure red striped wire to pin1. If still doesn't work I would say defective floppy controller, RMA the board.

Jerboy, must you troll on every single ECS thread you see? Its well-known you don't like/had a bad experience with ECS, but your comments are of absolutely no benefit to someone seeking help/advice.

Hey Jerk-boy, how does one fix a floppy drive read problem by driving over the motherboard?

Rottie, since you are not getting a light on when booting check your power cable to the drive, also let me know if your BIOS is detecting the floppy drive.

Apart from just checking that line one is consistent, also try switching which connector attaches to the back of the floppy. A typical floppy cable has three connectors-- one for the mobo, one for floppy a:, and one for floppy b:. Some motherboards won't see the floppy unless you use "the other" floppy connector -- either the one with the extra twist, or the one without the twist. I'm not sure why this is now the case, but it seemed to start happening when mobos dropped support for the 2nd floppy.

Rottie,

First make sure the floppy cable is connected properly ......... light on floppy must not stay on!

This has happened to me with the K7S5A before ................. all I did to fix it was short the cmos (re-set) make sure you un-plug the mb power connector (20-PIN) before shorting the pins, place the jumper (cap) on the short setting and go have a brewski for ten minutes or so, then restore jumper to default setting, re-plug the 20-pin power connector, reboot and enter setup and set time and date, save and exit and the system should do the rest........... good luck.
