Do you have this problem and you've tried everything but nothing work? I don't know if this has been posted but here it is:
I own a couple of this boards and never had a problem with poor IDE performance in WinXP until yesturday when my new K7s5a came. Carelessly installed WinXP and found myself staying up all night trying to find a solution to this problem. No matter what I do: newest bios, 1.07 AGP+IDE driver, play around with bios settings, another hard drive, and etc..
Note: WinXP include all the latest driver so I never had to install any other drivers on my other system. Default drivers produce best performance.
Bless with the luxury of owning a couple of these boards I compare my settings on each board to see what I am doing wrong. I found that I am missing a lot of drivers, like WinXP recognition of my processor.
I immediately notice that under Device Manager->Driver->
It said Standard PC, instead of ACPI PC
so I went and change my bios ACPI option to enabled but still no good..
Note: If you have this problem your Device Manager->IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers->Primany IDE will not say Ultra DMA Mode 5 but it will say "PIO" or "Not available".
The solution I found is that you must "ENABLE ACPI and POWER MANAGEMENT" in bios before installation of winXP.
If you don't know what I am talking about then just follow these step in preparing your computer for OS installation:
1. Press DEL to enter bios
2. Select "Load Best Performance Setting"
3. Set your CPU + Ram Bus Speed.
4. Exit and save. This should set everything you need.
5. Reinstall WinXP
I also found that setting HD to "user define" and "PIO to 5 instead of 4" does nothing. You can leave that to auto detection if you want. That is just PIO mode and it have nothing to do with your drive being ATA66 or ATA100. Your system will auto recognize your drive ATA100 and pio 4.
Note:
Since WinXP is just an upgrade of Win2K, this will most likely work with win2K too but you will need to install the AGP + IDE 1.07 driver.
I also found that:
OverclockWorkbench bios version 010911 did not fix the floppy problem on my system, though it work ocassionally. Some claim that floppy problem are fixed with newer board revision. The strange thing is that these new board comes with 'OLD BIOS that do not have floppy fix option enabled' on them. Official 010920 seem to fix the problem but I wouldn't trust it if I were you. Best Bet is to Flash your bios from your Hard Drive FatXX Partition.
