ECS K7S5A ruining HD content??

I have had ongoing problems with this motherboard for a long time. It worked well the first 1-2 weeks or so. Then the battery started complaining. I changed that. But I get occasional BSOD's just after Win98se has booted. Then today a new thing started. Some of my dir's and files on one of the HD's had gotten totally screwed up filenames, so the only way to repair it was Scandisk, which then deleted the bad entries. But now more files and dirs have been corrupted! WTF is going on? It's not a virus, I checked with Norton and I never use this machine for internet or anything. Just a music computer. Anyone else experienced this? Is this the motherboard or the harddisk (Seagate Barracuda IV) which is to blame? It is really really getting on my nerves, and I have to use this machine extensively for the next week but as it is now it is impossible.

Not a MB problem; a hard drive problem. CMOS low will not corrupt your HDD. Just change the battery and all is well, as you already did.

... but if yours loses the CMOS contents once in a while, it's rather more likely a lack of +5Vstandby juice from the PSU. You need an ATX 2.03 compliant PSU, 2 amperes on +5Vstandby in other words.

HDD acting up might also relate to a lack of juice - this time on the main +5V rail.

regards, Peter
