I'm having a problem with my new rig that at first I though was a software problem. But now I'm beginning to suspect otherwise.
First, the problem: I can't play any type of video file using Windows Media Player 7.1. Audio plays fine, but any time I try to play a video file, whether locally or on the Net, I get a message in the status area of the Media Player that says "Media opening ..." Then it just hangs, and I have to go to the Task Manager to shut it down, which is not always successful. (Sometimes I get blue-screened; sometimes I don't.)
Coincidentally, I run into a similar problem with Shockwave files.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled MP 7.1 and installed DirectX 8. I'd stick with MP 6.2 but it oes exactly the same thing as 7.1 when it comes to video files. I've even tried backing off hardware acceleration for the card, to no avail.
Now I remember reading somewhere that the K7S5A doesn't get along well with PCI video cards. I have an old, but otherwise well-behaved Diamond Stealth II S220, with the latest drivers installed. Could this be the culprit? Anyone else with similar problems?
BTW, I have an AMD Duron 950 installed; 384 MB of PC 133 SDRAM, with the Diamond card being the only PCI card in the thing. Running Windows98 SE.
