ECS K7S5A + memory

BUTCH1

Lifer
I was planning on buying a ECS K7S5A and xp1500, can I re-use my pc100 ram for now with this
setup??? Thanks for any help, Barry

Just to clarify a bit more, yes you can but your processor will not run at the stock speed. Instead of 1.33 (133X10)GHz, it will run at 1.0 (100X10)GHz I believe. Not 100% pos on the numbers but close enough to convey the point. If that is "OK" with you for now then go for it. However, why not sell the PC100 and get some PC133? They are practically the same price and at least you could run your processor closer to it's potential.

if you plan to buy just go for the ddr, why make another stop at pc133.
btw/ my experience you have to have a good chip on that mobo,
i can say samsung or crucial is agood pair. i tried to use generics and
it's not always working.

Or the PC-100 might be able to overclock and run at 133, might take a lower cas setting to do it. from the benchmarks i've read about sdram and ddr ram on the k7s5a, the difference wasnt huge, maybe 5-10%, so i decided to do the same thing and get a cheap lil' upgrade using my old sdram

that's a good try since BUTCH1 already has the pc100 but if you plan to spend some money
i suggest get the pc2100 or even better pc2700 if the price if not much different.
you can ebay the pc100 then

actually no the processor will run at full speed. I have the baord and you can set the FSB to 133 and the RAM to 100.

Thanks a lot for the help guys.. I've been running a 566@850 for awhile and its getting kind of stale
so I'm chomping at the bit to upgrade! Thanks again...

Hey Butch, the ECS K7S5A retail and xp1500 retail bundle is on sale at my local fry's (norcal) for $99 i think. I was planning on getting that combo but i went with the MSI K7T266 Pro2-A + AMD XP2000 combo for $159. Both are not bad deals IMO. Sale ends on tuesday, Aug 13.

I just replaced my 566/850mhz rig with a K7S5A/XP 1600 and talk about a difference! This is definately one of the best upgrades i've ever done. Everything is noticeably quicker and my FPS have skyrocketed. I just upgraded the 256 SDR to DDR and my first benchmarks were indeed only 5% - 10% different. Thing is with the DDR (2100) I can run the XP 1600 on a 146FSB making it perform better than the XP 1800 CPU. I can run this chip also at 166FSB (XP 2100+) for a short time before it becomes unstable, I believe it's the 2100DDR holding me back. Going to throw in some Samsung 2700 soon and hopefully it will be happy stable on a 166FSB.

Nearest one in Orlando, 70mi
C'mon, that's is just a "trip around the corner" for a true Fry's enthusiast. Heck, I live in N. CA and have to drive 46 miles to the nearest one.
