I just installed a ECS k7s5a mboard.

everything is great, except for my drives being stuck in PIO mode. I'm running win2k. Is there a fix for this?

<< Same problem here

I am using XP...... I've set PIO to 5 in BIOS and it does not work
>>

Try enabling the SMART hdd funtion.

I fix this now.

In the hdd properties, I changed it to "PIO only" and then changed it back to "DMA if Available". And, the drive starts to run at DMA ATA100.... weird

If you are using the reference IDE drivers built in to XP, or the drivers provided for 2K or older, you'll need SISIDE.EXE (sometimes) to properly enable DMA. Check out ocworkbench.com for the files and other information.

I have the same problem here. I've tried siside.exe and everything else I can think of. OCworkbench doesn't have anything the the FAQ for this so it can't be super common. Any other ideas?

I had it with My chaintech 7sid mobo in XP. Siside that Pabster fixed it for me though I think I used a different one than he gave me.

I posted the version I used here Try this one and it should work.

For W2K or XP to use UDMA modes with chipset integrated IDE controllers, one needs to have the BIOS set
to ACPI mode during _installation_ of the OS (and for operation too).

This is true for all boards, see the article on the MS knowledge base (search for "UDMA" and "ASL", ASL is ACPI
script language).

The K7S5A has power manangement ON in the bios by default. Is there any other settings in the bios that I need to look for?

I had this problem with the slave HD on my system, it wouldn't recognize DMA. Try this, go to the IDE controllers in device manager and try to switch to a different driver for the primary IDE. Allow the system to show you a list of available drivers and pick the standard controller(or other listed) then repeat the process and return back to primary IDE controller driver. This reset my primary channel to where the DMA if available option was listed and the active mode was ultra DMA.
