ECS K7S5A Board

i am trying to overclock this thing, but i don't remember what version of the board it is. 1.x, 3.x etc? is there anyway to check in the bios? i misplaced the manual so i can't rtfm

xp1900+ - don't remember which
Enermax 420W PSU
1 seagate 80gb
1 maxtor 250gb
1 plextor dvd-rw
1 sony cd-rw
geforce4 ti-4200

If I remember that board correctly there aren't many options in bios, I think you only have the option of setting the FSB/Ram at 100/100 133/100 or 133/133. If its already set at 133/133 I think thats all you get.

i know that, but i am thinking about flashing my bios and use something else. the problem is i dont remember which version of the board i have, 1.x and 3.x look pretty much the same.

man, I remeber when I had this board that I couldnt even get it to bot correctly let alone overclock....to me, not to sound like a flamer (I said flamer) but ECS boards are the worst boards I have ever dealt with.....

You are lucky if you can get it to run at stock speed.

I had a few of those boards and they were very stable provided you had a very good quality power sypply, that was it's only problem it needed a good psu.

Please don't rehash the nasty K7S5A debates 😀

These were excellent boards at a steal of a price. Still are. Overclocking isn't all that great, but what do you expect for $30-$40?

Have built many machines using the K7S5A.

Every one was stable and are still running great to this day.

Problem is people use crap for memory and powersupplies on them.

An extra 10 bucks spent on a good power supply, and some good name brand memory (I liked using the Kingston value ram on these boards, still cheap), and they are fine.

I have the Pro version of the K7S5A.

They are pretty much useless for OCing, but it runs fine otherwise.

BTW, for a faster bootup, flash the bios to one of HoneyX's modified bioses (if there's one for your version).
I enjoy the extremely fast bootup it gives me...remarkably, coupled with my 1700+, it still beats my Venice for bootup times :Q

Oh yeah, what's up! I've got my MAIN machine here running a Athlon XP 2400+ mobile chip running at 2.2GHz on a K7S5A rev 3.1 board. No extra voltage mod, but I can show you if you need a little more juice. 😉 Anyway, this bad boy is running rock stable with 3 hard drives, 1GB of memory, a 6800GT, TV tuner (Hauppauge 250MCE), Promise ATA controller, Creative Live! card (yeah, it's an old ass card), and cold cathode tubes. This thing plays Doom3, HL2 and Far Cry great and like I said, it's solid as a rock! But I'm gonna need to upgrade next year as this thing is about as good as it's gonna get right now. 🙁

Manchurian, you're going to have to look on your board and find the revision number. And like Budman said, get the latest cheepo BIOS, and try your shot at overclocking. Just a word of warning, you're going to have a 99% failure rate at hitting 166MHz FSB or higher, so keep it under 166. But I highly doubt you're going to get anything close to that without a voltage mod with the processor you have. Sorry.

That board rocked. I got a used one for $20 and it's been running in my lady's rig for well over a year now.

You know you're right. I guess the 15 burst caps on the 4 boards I looked at were a fluke.

I'm going to toss my current machine in the garbage and by a BARTON ! with a K7S5A. Then I'll be the sh***T.

The stock bios on these boards has next to no overclocking options, however you can find hacked bios's at places like OCworkbench that you can flash in that give you many more FSB options for overclocking. My original K7S5A board had this modded bios and workd great overclocked. I still have 2 K7S5A boareds in service at my house to this day. Good solid boards if you ask me.
