EcoSphere... These things are pretty cool.

EcoSphere @ Brookstone.

Their Site.

It's like a fully contained, non-spillable aquarium. It has algae and shrimp that live off one another. They say that everything lives for about 2 years and some up to 10 years.

They are expensive, but damn, they are cool. I think I might get one.

They are extemely hard to keep alive, a lamp on a timer is a absolute must, use a recommended lamp and wattage. They do (or at least used to) garrentee how long they will last, I dont' remember what it used to be but I went through about 3 of them and finally gave up when the last one died. It lasted a good 6 months or so with a good lamp on a timer and using a wattage they recommeded. Getting the light right is the key, you need to figure out exactly how many hours it requires. Too much and it'll die, too little and it'll die.

I'd have thought most people would experience what you did.

I'd be surprised if the average one lasts 2+ years, but 10? If that has ever happened I'm bloody impressed!

Yep - brookstone is full of things that are "so damn neat, I need it!", but then you realize you're bored of it by the time you get home 😀

I did get a nice nissan vacuum thermos though for Christmas from them.
