Circuit City to cut more than 3500 jobs

http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/070328/circuit_city_layoffs.html?.v=2

Gotta love the honesty.
Can you blame them? They have to keep up with the lower wages being paid by their competitors.
Best Buy pays minimum wage?

Can anyone confirm this?

I must have missed it in the article, I just skimmed over it, but where does it say that CC employees will be paid minimum wage?

in one hand you have,
Topic Title: Networking Support thread for the unemployed:3-19-07 Lots of new positions posted this week

and then in P&N you complain about jobs.

It doesn't and they won't. Depending on area starting pay is $9-10.... they cut most people $15+ I would have been one of thoose people if I didn't quit 6 months ago. They are killing themselves, 75% of the people they cut were the only people they had that sold well, hence why they made that much in the first place.

Yea, circuit city has turned to crap. The only time I go there is if best buy doesn't have the exact same thing, otherwise, I just get Best Buy to pricematch CC if their price is lower.

I agree with Dave, congress should not allow this to happen.

CC should be forced to keep these higher paying employees even if it causes them to keep losing money and if they go out of business because of high labor costs then that is their fault for having a faulty business plan.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that they would be paid around minimum wage ($1 more). Its not like sale associated at circuity city made $20 to begin with. I remember when I worked there about 8 years ago, the salesmen made commission and some of the guys did pretty well ($60k a year) and then they cut it to hourly about 6 years ago and it went downhill from there. Personally, I like circuit city better than best buy.

It has been said several times throughout this thread, mainly by Dave, that they will be replacing 3500 employees with new minimum wage employees, its even in the thread title. I'd like to see where he is getting this info from.

Does it take a rocket scientist to scroll up and read the post by the person that worked at CC and said that depending on the area they will be getting paid around $9 to $10 an hour? Thats a good bit more than minimum wage.

This what you are so proud of?

3-28-2007 Factory struggles after immigration raid

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - Michael Bianco Inc. was a success story, a small leather factory in a struggling city that landed military contracts at such a rate that its work force more than quadrupled in the span of a few years.

Federal officials said that growth was on the backs of illegal immigrants. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement rounded up 361 workers in a March 6 raid at the waterfront factory, and arrested the company's owner and three top managers.

The day of the raid, U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan accused Insolia of exploiting the illegal immigrants, paying them $7 to $7.50 per hour under "deplorable conditions," including fining workers $20 for spending more than two minutes in the bathroom or talking while working. Minimum wage in Massachusetts as of Jan. 1 is $7.50 per hour.

Maria Montanez wasn't optimistic after she filled out her application in the lobby. The 30-year-old mother of three was laid off as a nurse assistant two months ago. She has worked in a factory before and said the stitching is easy to learn. But she said needs to make $10 per hour.

"They're going to choose the one who works for less," said Montanez, who was born in Puerto Rico and lives in New Bedford. "I'll keep looking."

heh... nice to see someone still likes CC... im not sure if me and anyone else who still works there does...
they are initiating new pay scales... something like 9$ for new people, 3 years of experience get 10$ and max pay is 11$.
wut people make was based on a number of factors but they did cut pretty everyone who was over their pay cap for their position.
So in my case, I transfered from a position with a higher pay cap, into one with a lower paycap, cuz they needed help in that dept.
I'd say at our store, they let go 20% of the people who did 80% of the work and made 80% of the sales budget.
At our store, we did pride ourselves on helping customers and not just selling. We knew some other stores weren't as nice and only pushed for sales at any cost.

Our managers were crying at the meeting and morale was nonexistant. I wish they at least offered reduced pay since some of the long time seasoned vets weren't there for the paycheck. they were there because they loved circuit city and they loved helping customers. They were there because they loved what they did and it took care of their families.
I'm not sure I understand the logic in eliminating the most experienced and most knowledgeable workers, but I do understand the hgih paying parts... specially with a former BB VP at the wheel... I'm really gonna miss the crew we had... I feel bad for anyone who wants to shop there cuz the rookies who work there don't have anyone to traing them.

I'm not sure where the retail business is going. Compusa shutting down half their stores... Tweeter closing a quarter of its stores... and CC dropping its best people...
I'm not sure I know where I wanna shop anymore... Online stores and having products shipped straight to my front door seems to be the only thing left...

Here's more for you while you bicker over a couple of dollars the U.S. is a laughing stock now:

3-29-2007 US 'no longer technology king'

The US has lost its position as the world's primary engine of technology innovation, according to a report by the World Economic Forum.

The US is now ranked seventh in the body's league table measuring the impact of technology on the development of nations.

A deterioration of the political and regulatory environment in the US prompted the fall, the report said.

The top spot went for the first time to Denmark, followed by Sweden.

Innovation

Countries were judged on technological advancements in general business, the infrastructure available and the extent to which government policy creates a framework necessary for economic development and increased competitiveness.

The local Home Depot has been doing this for a couple of years at least...Something wrong with the whole concept to me...A company encourages their employees to learn the businses well, to earn raises, then, once they make too much, fire them...
Circuit Jerkit's customer service here has sucked for many years. I walked out last year, (first time there in about 5 years) and haven't been back. No need...I can get just about everything from NewEgg or another on-line retailer for MUCH less, even with shipping, and as bad as C.C's customer service has been, I'll still get it faster, even with shipping time!
Bah...l wonder if they fired all the executives who made too much....(sure they did  )

Well I guess theres a good reason not to shop Circuit City anymore.

I have nothing against cutting back, but firing people only to tell them they can be rehired for less pay for the same job is just low. Fortunately this is a free country, they can get jobs elsewhere and I can shop elsewhere

If what you say were true, then why are they firing people who make more than 15.50 an hour??????? 3x the current min wage? If what you say is true, they should have all been making min wage. Now why is it they werent?

Once again Dave is caught lying.

Topic Title: Economy Jobs:3-28-07 Circuit City Fires 3,500 and replaces them much lower wages - At least they are up front now
Topic Summary: Resident Republicans of course thrilled. See inside for yourself

That's OK, the thread in OT also shows how you Republicans hate America and enjoying destroying it as well.
