Economy Gas???

Gibson486

Lifer
I was driving and this gas station claimed to have "ecomomy gas". What is this? It is a grade below 87.....is this just watered down gas?

We have 87, 89 and 92 here in Oregon.

Interesting. And no, it's not just "watered down" since water and gasoline will not mix. It's just a lower octane grade; cheaper to make.

😕

Where do you live?

Most places, the lowest is 87. Though in Wyoming, Montana, and other places... I'm not sure where exactly, the minimum is 85.

FYI- 87 Octane in the US = 91-92 Octane in Europe. In europe, the number is.... Hey. Just go read the Wikipedia article, I'm sure it'll explain it.

lol Belgium
we get 87 89 93

And? What's wrong with it? Your beers are from Belgium. And they're better than those stupid Budweisers 😉

How is the grading different?

edit 1: IIRC, we do have better stuff here anyways, because on the first episode of Top Gear this season, when JC was showing off the Koenigsegg, he said that we would get better performance out of the same engine because we have better fuel here.

edit 2: according to Wikipedia, 87 octane in the US is 91 octane in Europe. So there you have it...ours is better 😛

logic1485, don't even try to rub your "superior gasoline" in our face when you have to pay $6.47/gal for it. It's quite laughable.

Higher octane does NOT mean that the fuel is better. Octane rating has absolutely nothing to do with fuel quality.

Well, considering that we don't have to travel the large distances that you NA people have to, it's a decent price.

BTW: that's works out to be ~ 1.42 USD/liter which is ~ 1.11 EUR which seems around right. But still, we don't have to travel the distances that you guys do.

And our average is around .75 USD/liter 🙂

As for the distances, it's not nearly as much as you think. Most of us don't live in areas where it's hundreds of miles away from anything.

Well, I travel ~300mi every 4-5 days. That's my doing, so I can't really complain too much about prices, but if I were you, I would complain. There's no reason for those level of taxes to be levied, but whatever works for you guys.

Laugh it up for now. Our day is coming.

If our gas reaches $6.00/gal, theirs will be double that, just like it is now.

Exactly. The octane rating is simply the anti-knock factor, a higher numbered grade has more resistance. A gallon of 93 octane gas has the same amount of energy as a gallon of 87 octane.

Well, the 2nd part is a little iffy. Fortunately, all the grades in the US are formulated so that they are within 2% energy of eachother.

But normally, the higher the octane rating, the lower the energy content of the fuel.
