Why is the word "Ambulance" spelled backwards on the front of ambulances?

Is someone going to be driving, look into their rearview and say, "Gee why is that odd, box-shaped truck with bright flashing lights and blaring sirens driving fast towards me? Hmm... seems it has some writing on the front, oh it says Ambulance! I had better get out of the way!"

And to answer your question more directly, you can never underestimate the stupidity of people. That is why the letters are there, if you ask me.

To answer your question more directly, it is probably due to the fact that you can never underestimate the stupidity of people. I am sure part of the reason may be due to the liability of the drivers the ambulance is coming up on. With the letters present, there is no way someone in front of the ambulance can say "I didn't know it was an ambulance" if they get it their way or cause problems.
