Every time i search i endup with links to schools and other places. Can someone point out the differences? I love working with computers so i want to major in something computer related but im not sure if im picking the right one. Can someone point me in the right direction or tell me what they are? Also what is a good computer related field to go into right now?

EDIT:
ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING (ECE)
ELECTRONICS AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY (ECET)

I think it's:

ECE = real engineering
ECET = wannabe engineers, technicians

Liking computers, installing hardware, playing videogames, etc. doesn't necessarily mean you'll be fit for electrical or computer engineering.

ECE you're an engineer 'designing' things.

ECET you're working for the engineer building his designs in the lab (grunt work). Doesn't mean this is boring or bad, but depends on if you want to be the designer, or just work in the lab.

heh, thats what i was gonna say. Just do ECE, it's a better degree. Don't waste 4 years of your life getting a watered down degree.

Oh, maybe I came off wrong there. I'm just saying that a lot of people go into electrical/computer engineering because they like installing videocards and playing games, and think that means they'll enjoy those fields. When they go to college, they're shocked about what it really is. Go ahead and study them though! Good luck!

I don't know anything about how MIT accecpts transfter students, but I'm sure if you are above and beyond they'd want you. CPP isn't too shabby in terms of ECE though :D

In anycase, since you go to Cal Poly I (or other CPP ECE students who visit this board?) could meet up with you on campus and tell you what we're doing in classes so that you could see if that's something that you might like. You could also find out who your advisor is in the ECE dept and ask them all what the major is all about. Considering most of them had been in industry at one point, they could give you some real life examples.

I'm only a 3rd year student, so I haven't gotten to many of the elective classes, but am plugging away at the 300 level ones now.

It's all about experience. Either degree is worthless without internships or some kind of professional experience.

Hey 'Square. I thought the exact same thing when I saw the thread;)

Go for ECE. We could always crowd more people into that dept.:disgust::|

heh serious, if you're gonna do ECET, why not just buy a ball, chain and shackle for your career while you're at it?

Thx for your advice guys. Good thing i got lucky and all the ECET GE classes i took matched up with ECEs except MAT130(technical calculus). I guess ill be switching my major soon. I should go talk to my advisor for the first time once i find out who it is.

Anyone who goes to Cal Poly Pomona:
On the piece of paper you get for the major your in, (the one with all the GE and core classes you need to take) did u you guys follow the back where it tells you the classes you should take every quarter or did u just go off on your own like i did?(i didnt know what the back was till 2 days ago):eek: <--- he looks more like hes constipated

ECE isn't a better degree and ECET isn't a watered down degree; these are two completely seperate programs with emphases to two completely seperate areas. If you want to do hardware design, go into ECE, if you want to go into more of an implementation area, go into ECET. ECEs would be nowhere without ECETs. It's like saying "don't become a nurse because it's just a watered down doctor".
