ECC ram question???

I have some Kingston ECC server ram and a BX board that says it supports it but when I try either stick it will not post (does fine with reg PC100) is this stuff 5V??? Could that be the problem??? In need of a little info here, never dealt with this stuff...

AFAIK, DIMMs of different voltages wont fit into the same slot.

Also, you don't have to worry about the motherboard being ECC compatable since it will autodetect whether or not the chipset supports it. I think all BX boards do though...

Have you tried the RAM in a different computer or different slots? Does it complete the POST if you have both the Kingston RAM and your old RAM plugged in?

be sure you're not putting it in at the same time as non-ECC RAM. That will *not* work and I have heard of it damaging the ECC module (I don't know why- it shouldn't hurt it)

If it doesn't work in another computer then your RAM is most likely defective. Can you get an exchange/refund (or did you get it free?)?

That's interesting, IaPuP. However, if he can't use it or exchange it then there is no reason not to mix them and take the risk that it will fry.
