Usually yes. If the motherboard's chipset does not support ECC, then that function is simply turned off.

Thanks for the quick reply

I just finish assembleing a new server for work and it will not boot. It ia a Supermicro X5DPA Dual Xeon board...I'm using 2 sticks of crucial ECC 512 pc 2700... When I turn the power on all I get is a long steady beeb and red LED on the motherboard...the manual does not describe this error. Any ideas?
