Back in the Pentium 3 days you could run ECC ram in a non ecc motherboard, it would just not run in ECC mode. Can I do the same with DDR2 ECC ram or am I stuck using only a 975x board?

I am not sure for each mobo, but the Asus P5W DH Deluxe will not take ECC memory at all. Same for the Gigabyte 965G-DS3.

I have 4GB Kit (2x2GB) Samsung ECC PC 5300 memory I am trying to sell now.
 
I'm getting the Kingston 2x1gb kit from the Amazon price mistake. Have you tried 1gb sticks also or just the 2gb sticks?
