ECC RDRAM, SDRAM, or DDR SDRAM has an extra chip on the memory module that checks if data is being correctly read and written by the memory module. If there is a error, it will be corrected. It slows down overall system performance slightly, however.

If you need accuracy, ECC memory is worth the investment.
If you need speed stay away from ECC.

Incidentally I bought an ASUS Mainboard last summer. It suffered from the "Cold Start Problem" which was not identified in any of the reviews I read. When AsUS finally came out with a BIOS revision that they claimed would fix this problem, the computer quit in the middle of the BIOS Flash. Because ASUS solders the BIOS IC to the board -- the board became junk. A similar peoblem with an ABIT board costs $12 to buy a replacement BIOS IC.
