I walked through sample handling, testing, and decontamination procedures of Ebola-infected patient samples with the laboratory staff at a major medical center today, so I'm getting a kick outta these replies....

Wait, so when someone who is helping over there gets infected they fly them to America?! WTF? Why not treat them where they are?

They should also ban flights in and out of the places that have ebola unless it's people going there to help.

You have complete freedom to go to Liberia. Coming back, um, well, maybe not so much.

Were I in charge, that would have probably happened a few months ago. But, (probability of a US outbreak)*(damage likely to be caused by a US outbreak) has to be compared with (probability of travel bans affecting US/allied trade)*(damage likely to be caused by travel bans). So, I could be swayed by a solid statistical argument, but I'd definitely be leaning toward travel bans.

The patient is believed to have had a handful of contacts with people after showing symptoms of the virus, and before being isolated, Frieden said. A CDC team was en route to Texas to help investigate those contacts.

The crew that transported the patient to the hospital has been isolated, the chief of staff for Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings told CNN.

Why are we flying to Liberia again?

They do transfer patients here for treatment, because they can't do what they need to do in Africa. So far I believe all the patients they have repatriated have survived.

Anyway, don't think that applies here. This is a person who didn't know they were infected because the symptoms hadn't shown up yet. It's one of the main things about Ebola that worries the people in power: you have time to travel around and get close with other people before you realize you have it.

Gonna be honest, with recent CDC estimates putting something like 1.4 million people infected by January if containment efforts fail, and with 50-70% mortality...that's fucking insane.

That has got to be an exaggeration.

I might be flying home soon from Thailand.

What's it like in America? Have people come back from the dead? Has the military taken over our streets?

I fear. :(
