Ebayers check in......or anyone

I sold something on Ebay and was paid quickly by a gentlman who has a good rating. I shipped the item out the next day priority mail "insured" and also with "delivery confirmation thru tracking " but I didn't use the "delivery signature required option."

About a week and half later, he emailed me wondering where it was and I told him I sent it out right away and delivery tracking on USPS site said he already received it bout 5 days back. He said he would go and look all over for it including neighbors and would get back to me and so he emailed me the next day and said its nowhere to be found.

I went to the Post Office and they said it shows as a delivery on our computers and something seems a little funny here. Myself and the guy have been emailing back and forth and I'm thinking this thing just got stolen off his doorstep. I shipped it in one of those 9"x6"x2" USPS priority mail cardboard containers and he does seem to be a good guy just from our conversations.

At first I got a vibe from the Post Office that they weren't going to cover the claim cause she said "well we did do our part"and then she said well just come back in 30 days and I'll talk to my boss and they will "probably" just pay the claim.

My question: So the money was paid already to me (bout 70 bucks) and like I said, the mail clerk said they "probably" will just pay the claim but with my luck, they probably will change there mind cause they did actually deliver it.

My question: What if the Post Office "doesn't" cover the claim?

What would you do in this situation?

*Pay him back right now cause he has nothing in hand and this isn't his problem and take it as a loss?

*Tell him that the USPS did confirm a home delivery and sorry I can't help you?

*Try to cut a deal and go half way or something?

I think you should pay him back, and call it a $70 lesson and always ship with signature required option.
I know it sucks but not worth your ebay good standing that is if you have a good standing.

Since you insured it, then you will most likely get compensation of the actual value from USPS.

Sucks but it's the right thing to do. Especially since the guy has been cool.

-Ditto. My first lesson on ebay was spendy. I listed an auction with a Directv receiver with an H card, when it was only an HU Card. I quickly refunded the guy his money, plus paid to have the stuff shipped back to me. Wasn't worth getting a negative. Spent about $30 shipping to get it back to me.

Thanks for the responses,I was kind of leaning toward just giving him the money back right now too. I don't need any negative ratings on Ebay either and for now on,signatures. Hopefully the Post Office will pay the claim.
