Is there a legitimate alternative to Paypal if you're a seller? Or does Ebay force you to use PP?

Lame.

I tend to buy heavy items on eBay, too. So this is going to suck for those sellers.

sigh. Selling stuff on ebay has become such a chore and all the costs involved are outrageous. But there still isn't any viable alternative for me.

ebay has helped me get rid of tons of crap that i don't need and would otherwise be clogging up space in my basement/garage. I just get pissed off when i sell something for $30, but then have to pay a $4 final value fee, $3 paypal fee, then on top of that have to ship it which could be up to $15 depending on weight. and that's if I have a good box lying around i can ship it in.

solution: know and charge the actual shipping before you list the auction.

When the auction is over... you dont get $30. you get $24.00 and $6.00 goes to shipping. you're not supposed to profit on the shipping charges.
if the item is going to cost $15, then you add $15 to the final auction value.

the ebay & paypal fees are yours to pay, since you used the service.

it's also $5 less than you would get on ebay after fees.

His figures made sense

sold for $30
~20% ebay + paypal commission, fees etc = $6
shipping $5-7
you are left with = < $20

So, if you are able to sell the same item on Craigslist for $20 with less hassle then it makes sense to take that route.

of course you didn't highlight the GOOD

"Starting April 19, Standard Auction-style fees will be changing. You'll be able to list FREE at any start price--up to 50 items a month. Plus you can add the Buy It Now option FREE to grab those buyers who don't want to wait for your listing to end. In short, you can now list even your higher priced items free--pay only if it sells."

gonna save me $75++ a month. I already offer free shipping anyway.

What? I haven't paid a listing fee in a while. I thought they got rid of it a long time ago.

But I don't sell much anymore... only the stuff that I can't sell on CL or the forums. Fuck ebay.

1. Fees are not 20%
2. You charge the buyer for shipping

Also, you can't autorelist on CL. I hate selling on CL cuz the process of relisting kills me

IIRC, fees for a BIN in VideoGame/Software/Movie categories is 15%.

I was pretty shocked when I found that out when I sold something for $40 and had to pay $6 in fees.

Excellent move from a buyer's perspective-I hate looking something up to find it has an absurd handling fee to offset the good price shown.

Now if they could do something about the sniping programs-they are extremely discouraging to occassional buyers like myself, so discouraging that more often I end up buying on Amazon if the price is in the same ballpark as ebay.

bid $.50 less than what amazon is selling it for. if you win... great.
if not... buy it from amazon, as someone else overpaid for it.

There is no reduction let alone dramatic unless you list alot of stuff and use their ridiculous listing upgrades. They just finally removed that bullet in their foot by doing what paypal does and apply that % fee on everything; by doing so it didnt even lower their % fee for the occasional seller like me. I have only used them for selling this year and was amazed how quickly i can move items compared to selling on fs/ft here. However found it increasingly hard to make a decent return after shipping and fees despite the "push price to shipping trick". Now once the change is in im going back to being a strictly a buyer.

I love the idea of ebay but hate the execution. But I agree with this new shipping policy. I know, I know it's the same thing whether it's $50 with free shipping or $1 with $49 shipping, but I can't get over the mental barriers when I see something listed with exorbitant shipping costs. I'm not paying $15-20 to ship something UPS ground when it weighs less than 2 pounds! I'm not paying more for the shipping than the item costs! Ever!

You think this is bad? What until Ebay is forced to withhold sales tax from your items (or you have to include it in the listing) that are then sent to the state you live in.

Not surprising, seems like they've been heading in this direction for a while. Always figured this was why they tried to promote and encourage free shipping so much (for example, by giving sellers an automatic five stars on S&H costs when a buyer leaves them feedback if they offered free ship), eBay makes more money if the shipping cost is lumped into the final value so they can charge fees on it as well. Per auction the extras fees they get probably aren't huge, but I'm sure little changes like this can add up very fast with how many auctions they do in a day.

I do like the idea of there being less fees and other BS for listing, though. Instead of trying to nickel and dime people I'd rather they just keep it simple with a single FVF if you're auction sells. I'm sure it literally costs them almost nothing to list an auction, there's no reason they need to charge for this.

Also, the whole $1 item with $200 shipping was already against eBay's terms of service. If you see auctions like this report them and they should be cancelled.

I see them all the time and report them. Never has 1 been removed.

Even with ridiculously inflated shipping charges like that?

Like I said it's against the rules, but maybe eBay doesn't enforce it very well. If so, this change should hopefully put an end to that nonsense.
