My brother in law just sold an item on Ebay, the buyer is new to Ebay with 0 feedback and lives in Nigeria.

The buyer wants to send funds via Western Union and have DHL pick up the item, I told him it was a scam but he is under the impression that as long as the check clears he is good to go.

Any opinions with how this scam works?

the scam works because the funds are bogus, you get fraudulent check, the check will not clear once the bank finds out it is a fake check, they take the money back

Beware if you have been overpaid for an item you are selling by cashier's check or postal money order and have been instructed to return the overpayment amount to the buyer or other party via money transfer. Cashier's checks and postal money orders can take up to a month to fully clear. If the payment turns out to be fraudulent, you could be held responsible for the entire amount withdrawn from your bank.
