Edit: took me awhile, but i FINALLY won... 18 or so bidders, picked up a nice working 40gb 4th gen ipod for $116 :)

Ebay rules.

People always snipe my auctions and I get a few more bucks.

Just put in whatever bid you're max willing to pay. Unless you get out bid, you won't pay more than that.

With a few seconds left, bid the biggest amount you are willing to pay. If you win, great! If not, the other person was willing to pay more than you for the product.

You're losing by that much because that's the next highest bid increment

They are probably actually bidding several dollarsw higher than you

uhhh, raise your max bid, if you actually want it, put in the max number you'll pay for it. Also, you can use something like unwirebuyer.com to have them call you 5-10min before it ends and you can bid on the phone. (and yes, when you sign up, you are going to list me as your referer).

If you are the second highest bidder you will ALWAYS lose by exactly one bid increment.

I do, but someone else always wins by $0.30 with 2 seconds left... Its not as if they put it as their max bid on ebay, they just sniped at the last second using something....

Oh, and bid what you are willing to pay and it's all good.

He meant "i'm losing BY xxxxxx"

it was a typo, but I see how it can be confused.

I don't think you understand how ebay works.

If you bid $80 and are winning. But at the last minute I type in 100000000000 dollars. I would win the auction and pay 80 + xx whatever the next dollar increment is...usually about 81 dollars

I think i do...

If they had put their max bid at even $10 higher than me, when i bid, it would automatically go to their bid at one increment past mine. What i am saying though is that I am bidding a certain amount, and i am winning until 2-3 seconds left, then they outbid by a few cents....

so whose to say they didn't bid $50 higher than you with 2-3 seconds left. They were willing to pay more than you. That's why they won.

You weren't sniped... you were outbid. Someone was willing to pay 30 cents more than you were willing to pay for the auction. If you would have been thrilled to get the item for $10, but had a maximum bid of $5 with 10 seconds left in the auction, well, then, that's your fault.

Perhaps you simply don't understand how to bid on ebay??
If the minimum bid is $2 and you bid $10, it shows as a $2 bid by you. If someone comes along and bids $3, then you are still the winning bidder; it'll increment your bid automatically, up to the maximum you're willing to pay.

"sniping" doesn't work when people simply bid what they're willing to pay.

Are you saying that the increment is greater than the amount they're winning by??

People make bidding way more complicated than it is. Although I do recommend a sniping program to take care of those people who will repeatedly make small incremental bids just to drive the price up once they see that others are entering bids.

I pick the absolute max amount I am willing to pay, enter it into my sniping program, and check back once the auction is over.

If I won, great. If not, then the other guy paid too much for it. Plus chances are there will be an identical item for sale soon, if not already. As long as my price is reasonable, I'll just keep bidding it until I win.

Yeah, starting with an almost prohibitively high bid when the auction is first posted is my strategy. I got a brand-new (in the brown box with Dell software CD) DVD-RW +/- DL drive for my laptop for $40 buy putting a starting bid of $85 (even though most auctions were ending just under $80.)

I was the first bidder, and the auction was 5 days long, and I still won with my original bid.

i really don't understand what the point of sniping is with the advent of proxy bidding...

B/C everyone knows that you want the item with proxy bidding. Nobody know you wants an item with sniping until their ass gets pwned in the last few seconds by a sniper :D

You are being outbid. Deal with it or make your max bid higher. Keep in mind bid increments also........

I also suggest sniping. I use auctionsniper.com.
