I admit, it was partly my fault. I should have skipped the auction all together since the auction was about to finish when I saw it. The guy had 512mb DDR PC2700 ram listed for $15 bucks and he didn't list a shipping price on it. 5 minutes were left and no one has bid on it yet. I went ahead and put a bid for 15 and won it. Now I asked him to send me an invoice with the shipping price included. He listed the shipping price as $12.50. I went ahead and sent him a message asking him to send it instead with a paypal's USPS Priority mail shipping label/w free tracking for $3.85 and reprice his invoice.

What would you do if you were in my place?

I took a quick look also at this page:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/listing-shipping.html

Anyone had experience with issues like this? Like I said before...it is partly my fault, I should have avoided getting into this but the price was really good.

Thank you for your time.

UPDATE:

Decided I need to learn my lesson and just pay it up. Besides, I guess its still cheaper than any retail out there. It was spur of the moment thing I guess when I bid on it.

Thanks for the tip guys.

pricegrabber search shows that goes for more than $15 + $12.50 = $27.50
so pay it and don't bid on auctions without shipping info in the future

What fault are you talking about? That you are stuck with a high shipping charge?

If so, then it's not partly your fault, it's entirely your fault. But just take the hit this time and learn from your mistake. $27.50 for 512mb isn't bad at all...so its not like you're gettings uper ripped off.

wow, you still got a great bargain. that is excessive shipping though.. if it would have lessened the bargain, i would have refused payment or contacted ebay to avoid negative.

I've seen that. I'm surprised eBay lets them get away with it.

Ebay seems rather impotent at stopping much of the nonsense that goes on. I wonder just how much money they lose on final value fees from unbalanced shipping costs. I wonder how much they would have to lose to wake up and do something about it. For the end user, it only really matters when you get stuck in a situation like the OP found. I had it once and I learned my lesson. You just have to suck it up and never bid on someone who doesn't list the shipping cost.

lol, you pay what the seller asks for shipping. You don't get to tell them how to ship it and how much you want to pay. Period.

Lol, you must not have bought from eBay much before this. eBay's pretty notorious for sellers price gouging on shipping. Sometimes, it'll still be a good deal, especially if it's an item that's worth a moderate amount, that no one else has bid on, and that you can get for a 99 cent bid. Can't blame the sellers 100% though, if they didn't do it, they'd be looking at pretty big losses whenever only one person bids on a 99 cent item. I think eBay fairly recently started supporting listing the shipping prices on the bid listings tables, but not all sellers use it, so I still always check on the shipping amount before even considering buying.

I agree, I usually avoid people who charge steep shipping, but the thing is, even with high shipping charges, all the prices still average out to be very close.

So let's say shipping for an item was only $5 and it sells for $45, so $50 total.

Another same item is at $5 but shipping is like $40...no one will bid it up more and still pay shipping. In the end, both auctions end up being very close to the same.

The buyers ought to be solving the problem, rather than ebay. If buyers passed up those kinds of auctions, they'd come to a screeching halt in no time. But they don't.

Ebay's not going to do anything to discourage listings, and cracking down on this problem at this late date would certainly alienate a lot of sellers.

the way around it that if ebay had you list a wieght and then you had to use the ebay shipping method.

Or they could charge fees on shipping as well.

Just make sure you leave the asshole seller a negitive review.

As for ebay they should require either actual shipping which must be printed on the label or free shipping.

There are a couple things you must think about in relation to shipping/handling charges.

1. A "Reasonable" handling charge is acceptable. Granted, reasonable is entirely subjective. You can include the cost of shipping materials, and can likely justify a small charge to cover the cost of gas. I always prefer to err on the side of actual cost of shipping, simply because that just feels "fair" to me.

2. There are times when using the cheapest method of shipping isn't an option for the seller. It could be that they don't have an excess of time to utilize a shipping method, or are a decent distance from the particular shipper.

3. Sometimes $10-15 is reasonable.

Guidelines:

1. Make sure you know you understand what's up BEFORE you bid.

2. CONTACT THE SELLER. If you have ANY questions, ask them. Ask if they are willing to talk about different shipping methods, for example.

3. If you have any misgivings, DON'T BID. It's that simple.

4. If you think the seller has violated any of ebays terms, use the ebay help system and report them. Ebay's system relies heavily on the ebay community of buyers and sellers to help police things. Think of the huge numbers of auctions posted every hour, every minute, and invest the little amount of time it takes to report a potential offending auction you come across. After you do it once, it'll get quicker and easier.

5. If you find yourself having bid on and won such an auction, maybe becuase you overlooked the shipping costs, send a friendly email inquiring as to the possibility of alternate shipping. Unless something is grossly wrong, you should honor your bid. If you need further help, hit up the ebay community message boards and/or things like square trade.

Harassing the seller because you think they are charging too much for shipping simply won't do anything and can often be short-sighted and selfish. Though you feel sooo close and surely you can change the seller and make them realize their mistake(s), it's just not gonna happen.
