Ebay: sellers want bidders with zero/negative feedback to email first. What's the point?

I've seen it in plenty of auctions "if you have zero or negative feedback you must email me first" I don't understand what is the point of such exchange? How would that assure the seller that he/she will get paid?

Because if you get an email that says

"Dude, joo gots to cell me thez stuff youz gotz"

Then you know not to accept their bid.

But honestly, I have no idea.

It at least shows that the bidder is not just bidding on things at random. He's legitimately interested or has at least wasted the time in emailing me.

I just put it in so I have an excuse to cancel their bids

OK, so what do you tell/ask them if they mail you?

obviously if they took the time to email you and say they are interested i will let them bid. I just don't want to take a chance that a new ebay user is just joking around.

I see.. I was just curious about that. Made me wonder if I should start doing that for my auctions too.

If i sell anything that is like 20-500 bucks i usually dont put that. Also some members that have 0 rating have had issues with other members so you want to make that you don't get screwed.

Personally i never had any issues with any members.
