I was just looking at Egay to see what iphones were selling for, and noticed that all the auctions I looked at didn't have bidder names. I assume that the sellers are just posting fake bids to get the price up, but I'm wondering if there is some other valid reason for this?

I've shopped ebay, but I've only made 2 purchases in the last 6 years because everything I've been interested in has either been a fraudulent auction or sold for full retail price. So I don't know much about how it all works.

This is actually a good measure. Scam artists in the past contact the losing bidders offering them fake second chance offer or sending them e-mail pretending it was from the actual seller. This new measure kind of solve the problem
