Ebay purchases and warranties

Have a question I hope a few could answer. If you buy something off ebay, lets say a PDA, is the manufacturer warranty still good? I thought only if the person/place is an authorized retailer the warranties are good.
 
Persay if the seller on e-bay is a authorized dealer for the company the warranty may be valid but more likely than not if it fails your out of luck.
