I have been looking at getting two small higher-end kitchen appliances - coffee grinder and coffee maker. The coffee grinder retails new for $99 everywhere - Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, Target, etc. It never goes on sale. The coffee maker retails for $175 everywhere and never goes on sale. I checked eBay and the same grinder brand new "buy it now" with free shipping is $50. The same coffee maker new "buy it now" is $90 with free shipping. Are these stolen items or fakes? There are multiple listings for new items at these heavy discounts, even with highly rated sellers. How can this be? I can't imagine they are fakes, its not like there is a big market for coffee grinders or drip coffee makers.

May be a slightly discontinued model, might be they are drop shipping direct and taking less margin than most retailers. I just ran into another product that sells for $500 every day, no discounts or coupons permitted anywhere, but they're listed all over ebay at about $325. Similarly, it's probably a hard thing to fake.

Also recognize that if you do buy from ebay there will be no warranty from the manufacturer, which is another reason they can be cheaper.

Yeah, could always be a grey market import.

My Bodum grinder is normally $100, I got it for $50 when they had a clearance sale at Target a few years back.

I once saw a Keurig on the clearance endcap at Target. I noticed a Target worker there with her pricing gun and asked if she could discount it anymore...she grabbed the gun and said, "Let's see..." It was a single-cup brewer that was normally $69.99...she was able to discount it to $17.50 before it wouldn't let it go any lower. =P

For the eBay stuff....yeah...maybe gray market. I've seen a lot of refurbs direct from manufacturers and extra inventory end up there too. It could be that with all the shipping nonsense that's happened in the past year that there's extra inventory they don't want to pay to warehouse. I could see that generating opportunity for you to pick things up at wholesale just for them to move the inventory and not get stuck spending more time looking for buyers of larger lot sizes.

Not necessarily true, many manufacturers or e-tailers (i.e. Best Buy or Newegg) sell new products on eBay with standard warranties. As for lightly used products, it depends since some manufacturers will extend warranty coverage based on the serial numbers in their database.

If I buy a newish iPad off of you, chances are pretty good Apple will honor the warranty without a purchase receipt (ignoring that warranties have legal jurisdictions). Without a receipt, it's not possible to accurately establish 12 months from the original point of sale. But if Apple's database says the SN is ten months old and it was intended for sale in North America, you could take that product into the Genius Bar at any Apple store in the U.S. or Canada.

Ebay buyer-protection is borderline better then Amazon these days (SELLER-protection not so much!) so I'd say go for it.

Worst-case if there's a problem you should be 100% covered.

Depends on state laws where you live too. In Connecticut for example if you purchased the item legally and it was in a sealed retail-package the warranty coverage is mandated. (CT has fairly strong consumer-protection laws)

For example my Nvidia 3080 FE has a valid warranty (per Nvidia) despite being purchased from an Ebay scalper.

The seller has a 76 rating 95% positive. Selling mostly kitchen stuff but a little bit of everything. Should get the grinder this week. Bought the coffee maker from same seller.

Got the grinder today. It was drop shipped brand new from a major retail chain. Went on the retailers website and the grinder was selling for $100. Seller must have some kind of discounted pricing agreement with the retailer or something?

Got the coffee maker today. It was drop shipped from Home Depot. I didn't even know Home Depot sold coffee makers. Went on HD website and they were selling for $180 new. I paid this eBay seller $90. Still don't understand how this seller is making money.

I don’t believe there’s 50% profit margin on consumer electronics at retail, so something else is going on.

Can you share the listing for the grinder? Maybe I should upgrade mine. :D

Stolen Credit Card / Gift Card. I don't know if you are obligated to do anything but you could contact HD and inform them of it.

I find Ebay to be a crapshoot for things like this. A lot of the time the big retailers (Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, Target, etc.) have better prices than the ebay sellers, and often by quite a bit. There are times a better deal can be found on Ebay. The discounts you proclaim there are bigger than I usually see. If you suspect counterfeits or other issues, take a look at the seller, sniff out the listing, see their feedback score, see if they do a giant business (5 or 6 figure feedback count) or are a small fish or pretty much a private party without having an actual business. Read some of the feedback, particularly for the item you are shopping. If buyers say they are totally pleased with what they got, I am much assured. I've gotten a lot of good deals on ebay buying new or used. For used, you have to be more cautious, of course, use your intuition. I've gotten burned a few times but rarely. Ebay has pretty good return policies. Look at the seller's return policy for assurance that they stand behind the item, that it's not an "as is" with no returns accepted. Absent that, you usually have recourse to complain and get refunded, and in my experience I have not had to pay return shipping.

BTW, I like my Capresso 560.01 Infinity Conical Burr Grinder, which I bought off Amazon around 3 years ago, except that it's noisy while running, but don't know that the others are significantly quieter.

I bought an Xtar VC4 battery charger off ebay maybe a couple bucks cheaper than Amazon had it. It was complicated because Amazon had two listings, different price, so I wasn't sure it was the same one. I settled on the ebay listing, but now regret it because it has issues. I should have bought Amazon, but never figured it might be defective. I can use it, it's just quirky in some ways. I heard since that Xtar has been having serious QC issues. If you are nervous you might get a lemon, sticking with a retailer that will stand by the product is definitely something to consider.

Serious answer:

Relatively small cosmetic defects or production issues that don't prevent the item in question from functioning enough to be useful often result in products being sold far below wholesale so it could be some kind of "second".... could also be unmarked refurbs.

Also sadly gift-card scams (and similar hijinks) are fairly common on Ebay too but as a buyer you're covered in terms of getting a 100% "as promised" item.

Depends on how much taking a chance at supporting a thief/scammer bothers you ultimately.... I think the vast majority of Ebay transactions are legal/legit these days but not all!

This does depend somewhat on where you reside/local laws.... I can only speak with certainty about where I live though.

In Connecticut for example if you purchased the item LEGALLY (meaning its not stolen goods/illegally imported etc) the manufacturer is required by law to provide the same warranty regardless of where the purchase is made.

This is not always the case although it should be IMO.

So the coffee maker was from Home Depot and the grinder came from World Market. Both in pristine new packaging drop shipped with all the little packaging bits inside the boxes, which to me suggests brand new item. The grinder and coffee makers also had packing slips from their respective HD and World Market warehouses. I checked the shipper address to confirm.

As far as CC fraud goes I'm guessing that's a no. I bought the coffee maker nearly 3 weeks ago so I would imagine fraud would have canceled the shipment. Also if this was a CC fraudster they wouldn't have tried to sell a high end coffee maker, they would have tried to sell a high volume item from HD like a drill or other common power tool.

I'm almost inclined to buy something else from this seller just to see where it comes from.
