That sounds about right UPS ground to the contiguous 48 states can go as high as $6.

its called "handling" ;) I always jack the shipping price up when selling on eBay. I overcharge enough to cover the eBay fees.

Thankfully most people calculate their final price via the sum of their bid and shipping price, so they can't be fooled. Although, I'm sure too many are fooled this way too often.

Just about to say that. eBay fees are going higher and higher, have to make them someway. Also the more a item sells for the more the seller has to pay. So I charge $50 to ship a Cpu that sells for $10, eBay only gets to charge their fees on $10, not $60.
And yes they kinda frown on this, and it can get you kicked off eBay

Unfortunately, it's a part of Ebay. I've even had an Ebay CSR tell me to charge more for shipping to cover fee's.

I think it's perfectly acceptable to pad your shipping somewhat, but when someone charges $20 for UPS Ground and everyone else is charging $8-$10 for Priority Mail for the same item, I think it's pretty flagrant.

The whole idea behind heavily padded shipping and handling is to catch someone snoozing and hope that they bid the same on your auction that others are getting and then make even more money because of the padded shipping charge. This is an aweful practice IMO. Expect to get hit with some neutrals and negatives for doing this. Not to mention, you can forget about repeat buyers or good word of mouth.

One of my major pet peeves is with PayPal and Billpoint. They deal almost exclusively with auctions, particularly Ebay, yet they insist on charging us a percentage of the total money transfer and not just the item. You even have to specify that you're using PayPal for an auction, so why not separate the fee from the auction price and the shipping price. At least charge a lower percentage rate for the shipping. They would probably argue that people would exploit this by taking a $100 total charge and splitting it up in $10 for the item and $90 in shipping.

Anyway.. It's just a pet peeve of mine that we pay fees based on the total amount of the auction and shipping and not just on the item that you sell.

Yea, it's totally fair to charge an extra $2-3 or so on top of what it actually costs to send something. People don't work for free. Packaging something, then having to take it to the post office is called labor. Charge what you think is fair.
