Ebay/paypal refund problem

So this guys buys something from me on ebay and pays with paypal.

Well a day later he sends me a message through ebays messaging system saying that his son stole his debit card and made the purchase and now he wants a refund.

Here's the kicker...I tried refunding the money in paypal but got a message saying that the account cannot take refunds.

Now he wants me to send him a check.

What should I do?

I think I'd wait to receive the item back before I considered giving a refund. Did you ship to a confirmed address?

No he said he wanted a refund before I sent out the item.

I don't want to send out a check then have him contact paypal saying that he never receivedthe item and have paypal give him his money back.

tough titties. he is responsible for his kid. if he can't accept the refund through paypal, he is the proud owner of whatever you sold.

Talk to paypal. If you didn't send anything, try working with them to refund his money. If they won't do it then, he may be outta luck!

That sounds like what is going to happen.

Tell him that since he paid with PP, he must accept the refund via PP!
Trust noone when dealing on e-Bay.

It sounds kinda shifty to want a refund in a form other than how payment was made. I'm not seeing anything in Paypal's help center about an account not being able to accept refunds either..

This is almost DEFINATELY a scam, I have seen it many many times.
If you have sent the item, can you recall it?
If not then contact paypal and tell them you may have been dealing with a 419 scammer, he will likely claim his money back.
The item more than likey shipped to a fake/dummy address.
have a look at http://www.419eater.com, in the forums there are many examples of this scam.
