Ebay: I bought something, it took a long time to get delivered, how would a refund work?

I bought a robomotic lawn mower(RL500 Auction) from a seller on eBay with 800+ positive feedback for around $200. I got the mower cheaply, but like most things eBay shipping was super-high and was $80 because the lawnmower weights around 90 pounds. I assume that the actual shipping costs directly from fedex were around $60. Fedex is past their limit(1 day over the limit), and said they will issue a refund on the shipping. Now the refund will go to the seller because he paid the shipping. The seller didn't put any shipping time guarantees in the auction. I have not notified the seller yet that it has taken a long time, and fedex can issue a refund.

What should be expected on my part?

Should I get a shipping refund on the fedex charges?

Should I offer to split the shipping refund with him since it's going to take up his time to file for that?

If I were selling the mower, I would send you a check for the refund amount. That's just the way I'd prefer to be treated, though, I doubt that there is a hard rule for this sitch.
