ebay - extra shipping?

This is only my 3rd time buying something from ebay. I won an auction for some hubcaps whose shipping costs were stated as $20.

The auction owner emails me saying shipping was a lot more than he expected. $35 plus $11 in packaging. He didn't expect me to pay for the packaging but wants me to pay for the extra shipping.

What is the usual protocol/etiquette in this situation?

Thanks

That's why I never state shipping charges until the auction is over and I get the person's address.

Just pay it and be done. That's what I would do.

35 plus 11 for 4 hubcaps?? Sounds a little high to me...
Are they some sort of especially heavy hubcaps?

If he stated the shipping will be $20 in his auction. He has to eat the costs.
If he refuses to to ship at that price... just report him to ebay.

Definitely his fault... either he should cover it, or let you back out of the auction... or unless you want it that bad, pay for it, or try negotiating some more. But it's definitely his fault.

things are as stated....$20, he should take it, if anything he shouln't state it at all or go a little on the high side

Exactly, I do the same thing on my auctions to save winners trouble of figuring out shipping costs.
It's not your problem, if he stated in the auction the total for shipping and he wants to back out of it and charge you more he doesn't need to sell on ebay.

Make sure you let him know you will contact safe harbor with the communication attached.
They will find that interesting.
