In the future, you may consider a buy-it-now with immediate payment required through pp.

BIT with immediate payment was offered. My terms are not unreasonable, if you have time to bid you have time to read the terms. Don't like my terms, don't bid. Isn't that simple enough?

I always time my auctions so that I'm able to ship within one day of the payment.

BIN with Immediate Payment Required
My experience has been that if the buyer does not pay immediately after winning the auction, they will take a couple of days to do so. So you can discourage that by setting your BIN sales to require immediate payments. That is, the auction does not end until they bin and pay through paypal. That will cut down on deadbeats.
