Many listings on ebay have counters but I am not sure what the point of a counter is. I can understand on a home page but an ebay auction is a temporary thing and I don't care if 100 million people sold my auction because it sold at the final price and that is that. Is there some line of thinking I missed?

Perhaps people like to know how many users are looking at their item. Just a wild guess. :)

You can also use counters to compare how well a certain title attracts attention.

Say you are selling something. Do a search for completed items for the thing you're selling. Look through some, and check the counter on each page. Now you can see how to word your title to get the most auction hits.

They are quite useful, and they're free. So why not?
