This is an email I got from the high bidder moments after the auction ended. Edited only to protect me and buyer. Oh yeah, and he just registered on Ebay, Today, Oct 13th.

He has an yahoo email address
Dear Seller,
Thanks very much for your email.I have contact my
shipper and he told me that he will come for the pick
up of the XXXXX (auction title),from your place as soon
as this transaction is sealedBut if there is any need to
contact my shipping agent here is there email address
address:johndoe@anonymous.com

This is how the payment will be made a client of
mine is owing me some fund in $4000 will instruct him
to issue a check drawn on a united state bank in your
name and once the cashier's check clears in your
bank,You will deduct the cost of the ADVERT and any
tax incurred and my balance will be send back to my
shipper via western union money transfer for immediate
shipping arrangement.
The reason for this is that it takes 1-2 days for a
check to clear there while it takes a longer time for
a cheque to clear here. If this is okay with you do
get back to me with your full name, contact address and
your phone number in order to instruct my client to
issue the check in your name asap Thanks for your
understanding in anticipation and hope to read from
you asap today.
Best regards,
Buyer,
I will compensate you with $50 to remove the ad from
the internet as i want you to consider it sold to me.
Buyer

--response--
Buyer,

I want to fully understand you intent:

1.) Your client (shipper) will send us a cashiers check for $4,000.
2.) We will deduct all costs incurred for shipping, handling and western union fees etc.
3.) Upon the clearing of cashiers check in our bank we will send the balance back to your client via western union along with the camera.
4.) Your client will ship to you the camera and the remaining balance.

We would like a signed statement from you authorizing us to send the camera that you are purchasing to your client rather than directly to you, releaseing us from any further liabililty.

Thank you,

Joshua

--2nd email-

It's a scam no doubt about it, just tell him you want a check for the amount only and no f*cking around, then he will probably never contact you again....or you could ask the evil brainiacs here to figgure out a funny way to expose him.

This scam is quite old. What will happen is that you will receive a check that will definitely bounce. Meanwhile, since you send money via Western Union, there is no way to recover it.

If you want to have some fun, tell him to send you money by Western Union or USPS MO.

Here's what happens. He sends you a fake check. You cash it and wire him back the excess in real money and you send him the item. When the check is discovered to be fake by your bank, the funds will be taken out of your account, and you are screwed.

It isn't a laundering scam. What they want you to do is to deposit their check, send the item, and then send them the difference in the price of the item and their check. They are even offering to add in $50 for your trouble! What will happen is that you will deposit their check and it will eventually bounce (not right away) or they will stop payment. By the time this occurs, you will have already sent them the difference and the item, so it is a double benefit for the crooks.

Also, I haven't heard of someone coming to pick an item up... that is definitely strange. It may just have to do with the item you are selling, but I would be very careful. I would e-mail the buyer and tell him/her that they can pay with a USPS Money Order, and that you will ship after the money order is received and cashed. Tell them to send an amount equal to the final value plus any shipping charges. If they do not write back, file a non-paying bidder notice and relist your stuff.

Good Luck!

Perfect feedback is NOT worth more than being screwed out of $4000 and a camera. I would look into eBay's safe harbor and see if you can report this guy. Technically he hasn't done anything wrong. He definitely plans to, though.

Make him send a USPS money order. Also, do not under any circumstances give him your phone number.

If he drops negative feedback, try going through eBay's Square Trade to have it removed, or simply respond that the guy was pulling a scam on you.

Sounds like you're not listening. Do not send this crook anything, and stop worrying about it. Just send the emails to Safeharbor, they will cancel the account, and you won't get a negative. Or do what some have suggested, and turn the check over to the authorities.

beware of "johndoe@anonymous.com" very dangerous!!

i suggest you contact ebay's fraud department.

however i doubt anybody actually works there because one time i warned them about a "just registered" ebayer selling $25 xboxes (and i have thousand + feedback, so u'd think they'd listen to me a little).

all 250 (or was it 500?) xboxes sold even though i warned ebay to end the auction several days before its actual end. -----> conclusion: they have monkeys working in the fraud department and 250 (or 500) angry (and naive) customers
