So I play a lot of tennis and I was looking to buy a new racket on eBay... there is a highly rated seller who sells three or four of the racket I want per week. The buy it now price was $120 the last couple of weeks but the auctions were ending at a little over $100, so they lowered it to $110 this week. The cost of the racket would be $149-$199 elsewhere and I figured $100+shipping was the max I wanted to pay.
Yesterday 2 auctions were ending... one at about 4:30 PDT and one at 10:30 PDT. At about 4:00, the later one's high bid was only $10 less ($80 vs. $70) and there were more bids on it. I was going out to dinner and a movie and I didn't feel like setting up an auto-snipe so I decided I should bid on the first one.
I managed to snipe the auction with a bid of $100.05... there were no other bids in the last 5 minutes, but the high bidder from earlier in the day had bid $100 exactly.
So I got home from the movie at 10:00 and of course I check out the other auction. 5 minutes left and it was still at $70. Uh-oh. In the last minute, three people try to snipe it but they all bid low and the winning bid is only $79! D'OH! Way less than any of the previous auctions had ended at.
I don't know exactly what the winner's max bid was so there's a chance I wouldn't have won the second auction, and I didn't pay more than I wanted to, but it just annoys me that someone got a way better deal than I did.
Cliffs notes:
2 eBay auctions yesterday for something I want
Barely outbid someone to win the first one at a reasonable price of $100
Despite multiple snipers, second auction ends at $79
I feel annoyed that I might have gotten a better deal and post about it on ATOT (even though that's how auctions work and I probably shouldn't be whining about it)
