EB Games stores

where the hell are the PC games?

I was in one the other weekend looking for a new PC game and they had this little 4' wide by 5' tall double sided shelf of pc games. there were 3 shelves on each side. the selection was awful, it was mostly older games. of the few newer games, they only had 1 copy each. i think there were maybe 8 newer games.

wtf is that about?

yeah, online is probably cheaper too. although sometimes you're in the area or want the game right away.

when I used to play computer games I would always get em from compusa. But back then I don't think ebgames carried ANY pc games at all.

Whats sad is they used to carry em, and now they've got 3/4 of the store dedicated to XBox and XBox 360 alone. No love at all for us PC players anymore. And, the guys working there used to be friendly, and actually like the games. Now they're all just a bunch of sore-loser jackasses.

EB used to carry lots of PC games (including pre-owned), then they were bought out by Gamestop (watch for name changes late this year)

Gamestop only carries new releases of PC games (very slim selection), and doesnt allow the trade in of used PC games.

Best Buy, Walmart, or Staples for PC games now.

evenwhen they carried PC games I never got them there, always more expensive. BB tends to have specials and whatnot, or if not its still $49 for some games and GameStop charges $55 or something.

I've noticed even with console games, EB is usually a few $ more expensive. Like, it'd be $50 at BB, but $53 at EB.

I goto BB, CircuitCity, CompUSA, Target, or Wal-Mart for my games (both PC and console).

I'll also buy PC games online if they have a downloadable version.

Consol game prices only have varience after 1+ years on the market.

Most games have a minimum mandatory 1 yr MFR price. (Depending on the publisher and title, some MFR's have a longer PFR Price period.)

Example, nearly all PS2 EA games come in at 49.99 depending on the title.
Prices reduce after 9 months to 35.99...
After 1+ yr the store is free to set the price point so as to sell unused copies (EAs period is 1 year because thats the cycle of sports games. )

uhh...how long ago was that?

probably over 10 years or so.

😕

EBGames started out with 90% PC games... back when they were "Electronics Boutique".

Anyhow, EBGames knows that the money maker is consoles and console games. Even old console games sell, while old PC games sit there until they get tossed into the bargain bin and some kid spends his $5 allowance on one and is dissappointed. Also, they usually only have copies with the discs removed on the shelf, hence why you only see one. They keep the wrapped ones behind the counter or in the back, so people can't steal CD keys and such.

I've seen brand new, just released console games going for $52.99 at EB, when it's $49.99 anywhere else.

The Staples around me usually have the new release games, plus a few older, popular titles. If they don't have what I want I usually have to drive about 15 miles to get to the closest Micro Center or Best Buy.

EDIT: But the EB games in the mall near me does have a pretty good selection of PC games. Maybe a 10-foot wall with 5-6 shelves and a 5-foot section with new releases.

The reason they don't is that they can't make enough off of the used PC games, which is where most of their money comes from is used games. I remember seeing reports that EBGames supposedly doesn't make any money off of new games, which I don't see how that would be possible considering they jack up prices beyond what every other store that sells games does (usually by about $5 more).

The local EB Games here has a bunch of used PC games, but I don't think they ever sell any. They have about as many boxes for new games, but most of those come from about 4 or 5 games that have several boxes out.

I hate going there at all anymore. Their prices suck all around, and their employees just get worse and worse. In fact, I'd say you could probably find better people working in an average convenience store. The last couple of times there has been this one guy who you can tell just does their full sales pitch like they trained him to do word for word, which includes trying to get you to sign up for like 50 different things before they'll let you check out. If they pull that crap again, I'm just going to tell them to either shut up and ring the my order up or I'm just going to leave.

I've heard that most game companies hate EBGames and other stores like them because they make a ton of profit off of used games (they push their used stuff as much as possible), which they see as cutting down on their sales. There was quite a bit of talk that this was the reason why Microsoft short-changed EBGames on Xbox360 orders, but I would chalk that up as just as likely it was the stupid managers at most of the stores who let way too many people pre-order.

My EBGames used to sell N64 games higher in price, but after the first year, I haven't seen them higher than anyone else. Always $49.99 or whatever the retail price is. Of course I never buy new games from EB anymore since you can get them for a better price on sale at Frys or Circuit City it seems these days.
