EAX3/4 on 2.1?

Does EAX3/4 need more speakers than a decent 2.1 config to sound better than EAX2?

i'm almost sure it does. EAX adds surround sound therefore you would need a pair of rear speakers.

EAX1/2 works with headphones and well as 2 speaker configs (just like the obsolete A3D, Qsound). I wondering if EAX3 supports headphones+2.1 as well.

I use EAX on my Altec Lansing 4.1 Speakers It sounds great on Call of Duty. Too bad my MX 420 only lets me play at 15FPS at 800x600 everything low
