whenever i turn it on in games (ie half-life, jedi knight 2), i notice a degradation in sound quality... is that how it's supposed to be?

EAX sucks.

Put your left speaker under your desk and cover it with some towels. that will prolly give you the same effect.

Im not sure how A3D works on these cards in half-life, but give that a try. If it doesnt work, just use regular sound. That what I do..

i've been happy enough... all i really care about is the positioning. i just found it odd that sound quality seems to go down with eax...

I tried EAX on my Santa Cruz as well, it always sounded like crap too...likely because EAX is a creative standard...then i got an audigy...EAX....still not so good...(only on battlefield so far though)

HL's sound engine is good enough that you should be able to hear positional audio without either A3D or EAX enabled. In my opinion, the game doesn't work well with it. Or, maybe my sound card just doesn't like it either, but I have a Philips AE. In other games, EAX2 and A3D sound excellent, even EAX sounds okay. A3D is leaps aound bounds ahead of EAX, but I prefer EAX2 over A3D.

I've been playing HL + mods ever since it's came out, and never enabled EAX (ok maybe once or twice). I always had heard positional audio.

I had an original Hercules Game Theater XP (basically same thing) and EAX totally sucked on it and took a big fps penalty. I have an Audigy 2 now and it sounds wonderfull with EAX enabled (you don't know what your missing dude) and there is absolutely no fps hit that I can tell. It's amazing!

The EAX 1.0 implementation in HL is one of the best. Can't say that about some other games out there. The problem with EAX running under the Cirrus Logic based cards is that these cards have a very weak reverb engine in comparison to the Creatives, which is what EAX leans heavily towards. Still, in regards to HL and it's derivitives, EAX should run fine on either a CS4630 or CS4624 based card. At least I never had a problem with it running on my Fortissimo II/III, Santa Cruz, and old Herc GTXP.

yes, whenever i enable eax on my santa cruz the sound is very echoed and muffled. In deus ex i remember if its on when you're firing a gun its very quiet, then out of nowhere its very loud again.
