Whoo! Tight and deailed audio, excellent bass and less audio lag in older games. What is this? the auzentech x-fi hometheater hd and denon 2809.
The auzentech x-fi card provides x-fi chip/ eax 5 and hdmi output. The denon 2809 adds speaker eq correction, timing and most importantly dynamic loudness called audyssey dynamic eq. Why dynamic loudness? Bass is somehow perceived or reproduced (i don't know which) differently at different volume levels. If the artist works at -15dB theater reference level and you play that back at -24db, you won't get as much bass as the artist heard while mixing.
The same applies to movies, and pc games too naturally.. This phenomenon have created the "house curve" term. But the difference is that audyssey dynamic eq adjusts the eq on the fly so you get correct bass at every volume level.
Currently with the 2809, it is only optimized for reference level, ie what movies are mixed at. In the future, audyssey will probably create new reference levels for music, classical music and games. I believe Modern Warfare 2 was created in a Dolby certified mixing room at about -24dB under reference (cinema) level? The denon 2809 does not do room correction/speaker eq or dynamic loudness eq on analog multichannel in.
I play a lot of old games, and DoomLegacy never sounded so good :0 Modern Warfare 1 also was amazing, Battlefield 2 is also great. But keep in mind I haven't done a blind test yet!
Just thought id write about this. There are negatives like very unresponsive and bloated control panel, somewhat difficult to setup hdmi audio and you have to have a dummy display if your pc monitor is not connected to the receiver. And the audyssey multieq xt room correction is not very gold at eq down the bass.
On that note I'm building some bass traps to reduce comb filtering and modal ringing, but that will be another topic.
