While cases have increased in poorer areas due to improved sanitation, cases have increased in more developed countries,

Improved sanitation caused an increase in cases?

This type of infection is life-threatening once it reaches the brain.

That explains it.

Snopes says, "Not so fast."

Snopes said:
In summary, what these images show is the aftermath of a parasitic tapeworm infection caused by the eating of raw or undercooked pork, not sashimi. And what's viewable in the x-rays are not the tapeworms themselves, but rather calcified cysts that were the end result of the infection.

Daily Fail. You have to read between the lines to get anything worthwhile from that site. By which I mean, look at the pictures and leave.

This is why you always eat gas station sushi as it's the only safe kind to eat since it will kill you before the worm can grow.

If you're eating what is basically bait, it seems to me that worms are to be expected.

I think the danger posed by heavy metals is more worrying, but yeah, the quality of sushi and sashimi isn't what it was back in say, the 70s. At least with parasites you can kill them with acids and heat. I've seen enough horrible news related to both categories of risk to know that I no longer include it in my diet. I only eat seafood when I know where it came from, and even then I rule out some sources.

Mercury, cadmium, arsenic, PCBs, plastics.... screw that, I'll get my omega 3s and 6s elsewhere thanks.

That is why pork is viewed as unclean...

Nahh. Pigs eat the same things people do, and slaughtering, storing/consuming pork in a hot environment without a method of refrigeration leads to disaster. Those rule writing Jews and Arabs realized competition for food that can also kill you in a horrible, painful fashion is probably something that should be avoided. So common sense arrived at by trial and error was dressed up in religion so everyone paid attention and fewer people died.

You can buy pork products in Qatar and Sa'udi Arabia now, you couldn't when I was a kid. Alcohol is considered unclean in islam too, but you won't have a problem finding a drink in Turkey, Iraq, Qatar, UAE, etc.

I'd guess most Chinese people are infected with tapeworms. Who can say whether it was sushi or not washing dirt from under his nails that caused the infection. This is why we need Obamacare.

Idk about tape worms, but I heard a guy from Drs Without Borders state that in undeveloped parts of Asia and Africa the majority of people do have some kind of parasite, usually something harder to notice like pinworms. But you hit on another point, often it has nothing to do with the actual food itself, but the lack of sanitary conditions or especially clean water. Any of you who know what the guinea worm is know what I'm talking about. I'm very glad we don't have to worry about that in the States, and my heart goes out to those who have to deal with them (mostly kids too btw).

This is the reason I donate to and support international clean water initiatives. If you've ever seen a screaming 10yr old held down as a guinea worm is pulled from his leg, and then the line of boys and girls behind him waiting their turns, it really gives you a whole new outlook on that ordinary cup of water most of us take for granted. :(

The British still cook the mother loving shit out of pork for that reason. If it's not black, it's not bloody well done. When my Mom used to do pork chops, it was like eating shoe leather. :p

Some wild fish do tend to have parasites. Cod and Haddock are notorious, which is why they have to be well cooked. They're not really used that much in sushi though. A good restaurant will know where to source safe ingredients. The fish has to be as fresh as possible. Flash freezing will kill off bugs as well. Heavy metal poisoning is the bigger issue.

If you're worried about the fish, just get the vegetarian rolls. They're pretty bomb. Damn, I want some now.

I think the issue has more to do with him eating sushi in China than eating sushi. More developed countries have a more developed regulatory regime when it comes to sanitation.
