Eating Patriotically

Eat me, Chief.

Remember Freedom Fries, from when we were mad at the French because, I dunno, they were French? Well, turns out upstanding, patriotic "Muricans have been renaming food since WWI, when "we" decided to call sauerkraut "liberty cabbage."

What's next? I mean, we have major beefs with Russia, China and NK.

Will we rename Borscht the Biden Beet Bowl?

Help me out here. I got nothing.

I have a weird vague memory that hamburgers were named "liberty sandwichs" in the same vein as freedom fries at one point in America.
I'm probably wrong but I'll commit and look it up after posting!

Yeah it was basically "How dare you criticize us for invading a country based on BS reasons."

The fries were renamed, because the French refused to allow the US to use their airspace to go bomb Iraq.

I guess the "freedom fries" thing was directly inspired by those previous occasions of renaming things due to international disputes, like the sauerkraut mentioned.

Weren't Alsatian dogs renamed from German Shepherds for similar WW1-related reasons? Throwing in a provocative reference to Alsace-Lorraine for good measure?

Then perhaps we should make it twice cooked Mulefoot.
It's called Mulemeter in most of the rest of the world, Mr. Moon! Of course, the metric system being French, patriotic 'Muricans eschew it. May God bless the furlong, muthaflockers.

I can only think of "hot dog" being the one example of such re-namings that actually stuck. (WWI pre-US entry propaganda to get everyone riled up against them dastardly Krauts.)

Are people really surprised that the same industrial food system that marketed meat as the mark of masculinity (and quadrupling down on that) is exploiting the same assholes under the guise of patriotism? Which, I guess at least the latter can be viewed as fundamental to America, starting with the whole Boston Tea Party thing.

Pho becomes FYGM...meh, too early.

There's gotta be an Italian pho place "Phogettaboutit"

There's a Fuku Sushi in Tempe that I get a chuckle at (apparently there's several in Arizona so maybe its more of a chain than I realized). Which reminds me, there's a chain called Long Wong's, which is pizza, wings, even burgers. Not sure if they change it up depending on location, but with the name and them using the font of stereotypical Asian places (and some of their places I think have almost stereotypical chinese style to the building), but the food is like deep fried American stuff. They have a meal deal called "Fat Ass" too. Which then reminds me of a pizza place in the college town I went to that had "The Big Ass" pizza.

Mulefoot hogs are as American as Harley-Davidson's and twice cooked port is considered a delicacy among traditional Chinese for chewing the fat.

I'd walk long rods and chains to share with you a meal like that.
