i just saw a report on emu meat... it appears to be a new fad since it is very nutritious and low in cholesterol.
plus the 'red meat' makes it taste like steak.

anyone here actually had emu before? what's it like really?

i might get some for my parents..but it's expensive for the few steaks you can get. i want to know more about anyone's experience with it before i decide.

No, ostrich isn't the same...I've had an ostrich burger before...I ate it and it pretty much tasted like a normal hamburger.

It LOOKS a lot like beef, but it is not as good.
Maybe if it had more fat, but that would defeat the purpose.

Yep I had it. My brother raises them as a hobby. It tastes just like beef and costs twice as much so its not gonna be a mass market thats for sure. They are real easy to keep and cheap to feed so brother just has them for fun basically. He did make $15K selling the fat from 20 or so of them.

I personally wanted to raise buffalo but they are much harder to keep and require big expensive fences plus the cost of the starter animals is high.

They sell (or used to sell) ostrich burgers at FuddRuckers around where I live. They're supposed to be healthier than beef burgers.

Yes, I had a emu burger once. There are lots of emu farms in the US now. Tastes like Turkey.

Did you know a Emu can disembowel you like a Velociraptor. wouldn't get in a pin with a bird that can gut you like a fish.

I'd still rather be in a pin of emus than a pin of velociraptors (if velociraptors weren't extinct, that is).

Never heard that but they can kick like hell. :frown: They don't back up, they just rotate the head and then the body. They can't be hearded I guess either...they will just try running/jumping over you. They also like shiney things and can peck hard if they see somthing they like.

LOL, never tried it but being a college student that eats practically EVERYTHING, I'm sure I wouldn't mind trying it.
