easynews vs giganews (30day retention now)

i'm familiar with what easynews is about... but never experienced giga. now they boast 30day retention (check their main page) and you can buy 99bucks for 100gig/12month sub.

which provider is better?

i think with easynews, their webbased interface has longer retention than their nntp...

but easynews is slightly on the expensive side at 10bucks for 6 gigs.

What are the download speeds and file completion rates? That's the big key, a web interface is just eye-candy, it's worthless for heavy downloaders who need something more powerful. No matter how good the interface is, how large the monthly bandwidth allotment or how long the retention, the service is useless if it's a mass of incompletes or if the speed is too slow to grab anything.

Agreed, I've had easynews in the past and now just have the 1GB giganews comcast account. From easynews I downloaded big programs, and never really ran into incomplete files. The download speeds were as fast as my cable connection would allow at the time(1.5Mb). The main thing I liked about easynews was the global search feature that would search all newsgroups, also the web-based interface was useful to use from remote locations like work that have firewalls and such preventing using newgroups via a nntp server.

I used easynews a few times.. one thing I wasn't sure on - does downloading the headers go agains your transfer count ? I would think it does, and I'm sure it says on their site somewhere, but thats a bummer because the group I downloaded most from (alt.binaires.cd.image.xbox), would take a few gigabytes to do a full update of just the headers =/

From what I could tell, it never did. It only seemed to add up when you downloaded a program. I could tell right off the bat that giganews did count the message headers though.

I've got Giganews and headers don't count towards your download limit. Retention is a little bit more than a month actually (about 5 weeks or so). I'm getting a full 3 Mb/s connection whenever I download from Giganews.

I currently use usenetserver.com. Horrible retention, but unlimited downloads, and even though it says 2mbit maximum I always get my full 3.5

Is there a difference between the comcast subscriptions and the regular subscription. Because just getting the headers definitely decreases my account.

Never tried the Comcast subscription but I've never had header downloads count towards my monthly download limit. I downloaded about 4 gigs worth of headers last month and it didn't subtract 4 gigs from my 40 gigs/month limit.

thats available but so are movies, tv shows, cable tv shows, talk shows, music videos, games, programs, utilities, music, just lots of interesting things.

I have giganews and used to have Easynews. Easynews web interface is sweet but it's too $$$. Giganews has great retention and speed and the price is pretty good. Downloading the headers can be a pain. At the end of my cycle I may switch to an unlimited service or try something like Astraweb.
