I just successfully restored my complete customized W2k partition that included SP1 update, favorites, settings, and drivers and program settings. (programs are on seperate partition)
The W2k directory restored was 1.8G, 12,440files.
Power Archiver 2000 spanned and compressed them to (2)folders, 615Mb and 115Mb size.
I Used the Free utility 'Power Archiver 2000' using .zip format and setting set for 650Mb span size so I could save it on cd.
Here's how:
1. Must be in a seperate partition in a seperate OS such as W2k2 or W98. I have 2 Windows 2k Pro os installed in seperate partitions and Application files on a third partition that they both share.
2. If you want to back up W2k, boot to W2k2, use Powerarchiver to zip the complete drive. Creat a new archive file and place it in n a new folder on W2k2 or another partition but not W2k partition.
Set Powerarchiver to use max. compression and span setting (use custom and set to 650mb).
Define the size of the span files to be 650Mb for saving to cdr.
3. Select the drive that W2k files are on and zip. Be patient as it will seem that nothing is taking place for a while. After a few minutes PowerArchiver will begin displaying the the files being compressed, which will take 20-25 minutes.
4. When it is complete, you will be able to save the files to cd using any data CD utility.
To RESTORE or Install to new HD:
1. Copy files to HD partition that is formated the same as previous system (FAT32 or NTFS). Extract the files to the partition.
2. You will have to boot up in SAFE MODE.
3. You may have to update all your drivers as I did.
This does not mean that you need to get your discs out and reinstall all your drivers. Just go to start-->settings-->ctrl panel-->admin tools-->computer mgr.-->device mgr.
Your video, Hdd, floppy, should all be installed correctly. Only perhaps the sound and modem drivers will need UPDATING:
click on each device and check that a driver is installed.
If not, select update driver. Ignore where it wants to get the driver and just select next for all and then finish. Don't reboot untill all are done. The drivers are there, they just are not pointed correctly.
Reboot and all should be as before. This is assuming your application files are still in the same location (directory).
The advantage of the above procedure is that it restores a complete W2k setup in 15 minutes using free software.
Disadvantage: must have 2 operating systems installed.
Perhaps if a ghost program is used, the driver reinstall may be easier. Please make suggestions to improve this and if possible, using freeware.
