Easy way to get a few more WU's. :)

well i only get access to those puters for about 3hrs per week, and access to Duron 650s and Cel 533s mainly, so they'll be run on lots of different PCs over the course of the week!

but i will complete one WU on the low Cels

yeah, that'w what i intend to do, make full use of the computers that we have!!

i'm currently runnin it off a floppy on my Duron 700 @ 864, and Seti Driver has said for the past 2 or so hrs when i click on "Update Progress Now" says it'll take 7:45 to 7:47, which is just as good, if not slightly faster than runnin it off HDD!!!

ConfusedBW

P.S. If every1 did this on every PC they go to with a floppy drive, then this could be our secret weapon against S@N!!
/me looks round for any S@N members lurking around 😀

well i thought that if the firewall has blocked access to the ports, then i've got 2 WUs on the floppy to work on, and i can flush when i get home 🙂

To quote the distributed.net page:

distributed.net does not condone the unauthorized use of its software on any computer system. You may not run any distributed.net software on a system unless you own the system or have received permission from the owner to run distributed.net software. Running the client on a machine without authorization will result in your removal from the project and will disqualify you from winning.

I think that this activity is still a violation, because it doesn't matter if you install it or not, you are using CPU time, and that is where the violation occurs.

Hmm. What's SETI's use policy?

Also, if you have access to use the computer, can't you run what you want while you're using the computer?

Running RC5 and OGR on a floppy might pose a problem (especially for OGR) since it discounts the current WU when switching to another core (as far as I remember 😱 )

You could still have different disks for different computers.

I like the Seti idea since we have access to sh*tloads of P3 866 and 933 at our school 🙂

There must be a way to get SETI not to access the disk so often as mentioned...

well it finished the WU overnight on my Duron, and it completed it in 7hr 23mins, probably my best result ever!!

as for it keep accessing the floppy, i don't know how to stop it (or at least make it access less often), but when i'm at the puter, i don't really mind it keep goin onto the floppy!

cirrus1, ya really should ask if ya can install Seti as a service, this may help us at least make cobraICE's dumps seem a little less big!!

That's a high angle WU ,a fast 1 in otherwords🙂.
Still gives us some idea that there is no major time penalty on running off a FDD.
I bet it works the FDD hard though?!😉

I'll do what I can to get those machines assimilated. I don't think I will have much luck with the two system administrators but I'm very good friends with my IT teacher who is the only of the teachers with Administrator rights on the school network.

It will be another month or so until we start at school again so be patient 🙂

Here is a guess of what I think we have of computers at school (more will likely be added after the vacation):

At least 30 Dell workstations with 866-933 P3's
5 small webservers Dual 1ghz
40-50 workstatoins: 550mhz K6-2
50-60 233-500 mhz P2
and some big MF servers (shown to me after many months of persuation as they are considered as being holy). Can't remember any system specs though...I think they were IBM...

Oh man, that would rock! 😀😀 When you talk them about SETI, mention you can make an install disk (here), so it'll only take 1-2 mins per PC to install it. Tell them it'll run totally hidden, and will only use up idle CPU time, so none of the programs should be impacted. If you get permission to run SETI on any of the dual NT/2K machines, I can also make up a multi processor service install for SETI. 🙂

BTW, the K6-2 (assuming they aren't K6-2+) machines would be far better at OGR than SETI (and they need lots of help to hold off the DPC), so you might want to see if you can run OGR on them. The DNet client can also be installed as a service very easily.

I can't imagine how high your output would be with 30 866-933 MHz PIII's, 5 dual 1000 MHz PIII's, and 50-60 266-450 MHz PII's! :Q Even if they're only on during school hours it'd still get you tons of output..as a really rough guess I'd say you'll get atleast 70+ WU/day running 8 hours a day. Now if you can get them 24/7...oh man. 😉

My school has 25 PII 400 MHz I'm going to try to asslaminate once school starts. They're only on about 7 hours a day, but it'll still get me around 12 WU/day. 🙂

Oh a little side notice... As I use a NAT proxy at home I wouldn't know what port the client uses. We only have access through port 80, 21 and the one for telnet 53 I think it is at school. What port does the client normally use?

I don't have any little disk like that made up for a 9x service install, but I know it is possible. I'm not sure the exact registry key you need to put in, but I can find out if you need.

Telnet is port 23.

You'll be ok then with the firewall. AFAIK the regular SETI port is port 80. 🙂 However, you'll have to go into the .reg file and take out the -proxy orangekid.teamanandtech.com:5001 line.

BTW, if your school admins don't like the idea of that many machines all connecting to the net to get data, you could set up a SETIQ proxy at school and have all the machines connect to that, and then have it connect to SETI.

A win9x setup disk would be nice but I will not have any use for it at school since we run NT 4.0 or W2K.

Good idea with the proxy 🙂 That way it would be hella lot easier to monitor 'em all. It'll be no problem I'll just have to edit reg file and then were rolling 🙂

Yeah, just go into the seti.reg file and change the -proxy orangekid.teamanandtech.com:5001 to -proxy 192.168.0.1:5117 or whatever you end up running SETIQ at.

You should also tell your school people that if you run a SETIQ server like that you'll be able to monitor the computers' output so you can tell if anything is wrong.
