I didn't see anything about whether or not it has to be a working drive. I have some that I opened and damaged the platters and removed magnets they can have.

Re-read your top link and it says 'any storage device'. Wonder if I can use an old 8MB SD card? I see there's a limit of 1 per household.

yea it can be broken sure.. i wouldnt try a sd card but sure it is a storage device, i bet you have a few old devices with a hdd.. old ipod? dvr? heh
