Easy Sound Dampening

OK, I have a pretty standard rig, and I'm not an OC'r, so I don't have too much extra cooling going on, but I'm trying to quiet down things without spending too much $. Any ideas for a starting place? Particularly has anyone had any good/bad experiences with sound dampening foam mats (or home depot substitutes)? or those rubber things that you put between the fans and the case? Thanks!!

on a completely different note, anyone know how to turn off internet sounds in Firefox? When I listen to music whilst surfing the internet, the sounds from websites, flash games, etc., come though the sound card with my music. I basically just need to mute the internet (I turn off system sounds to get rid of clicks and window chimes, etc.)

thanks for the help!

ou can line your box with synthetic carpeting - and move it under your desk on the floor.

From what I have read, in odrder to have sounds like you describe in Firefox, you have to install extensions. Why not just uninstall those extensions. And set your Windows Sound events at "None."

I use rope caulk (sold under the Mortite or FrostKing names most often) to damp tinny case panels. Not pretty but cheap and effective. Besides you can use it to keep the drafts out in the winter too...

Wouldn't winter drafts be good? Winter is usually cold, thus a chillier case. Maybe you are referring to beer.

I think he was referring to use the Rope Caulk to insulate parts of the house to prevent the cold drafts entering the house rather than stop cold drafts entering the PC Case as a unit.

I have heard bad things about the sound insulating mats... They seem to act as a heat insulator as well and can cause your ambient temps to go up quite a bit. Is it an option to just buy quieter fans or a different heatsink? What are your specs?

I'll have to start using smileys.

BTW, OP, what is in your setup? I don't want this to turn into a "you should buy [insert component] because it's quiter than what you have" thread, but maybe we can help suggest some items knowing what you've got.

I suggest you get a fan controller and run them a bit quieter then put them on rubber grommets to reduce vibration. The akasa soundmate mats are pretty thin in terms of creating more heat they aren't bad. They are dense and reduce noise fairly well.

Grommets or sound isolator rivets are good. Or, simply use double-sided foam tape. Avoid asphalt based mats. Vinyl is much better but more costly (however may be cheaper from a normal supplier than PC enthusiast shoppes). Diff'rent materials are better for low or high frequencies. SpeedFan is a great free software fan controller.
