easy question

I know this is a REALLY basic and probably dumb question but I have never claimed to be a genius. What exactly happens when a computer posts? Is this the same thing as boot? I just spent the last half an hour looking in the archived messages so I didn't seem like such a nimrod but couldn't find the answer.

Thanks!

(Try not to laugh too hard)

Posting means pretty much the same as booting. The best I can describe it is when you see the CPU and Memory counts before it starts to boot into the OS. Its pretty much the first thing you see, well unless your video card displays some information.

Im sorry the choppy explaination, but I really dont know how to word it better.

POST stands for Power On Self Test. This is when the computer checks the ram, what devices are on the PCI bus, etc...

Your computer does the POST first. If all the tests are passed, then it will boot normally. If one of the tests fail, that's where you get all those beeping sounds or no sounds...Hope this helps.
